I dislike how the popular image of WWI in Anglosphere media is tightly constrained to a few areas of the Western Front ( Gallipoli occasionally). Show people 1914. Show them literally any of the Eastern Front.

People curious about how armored vehicle design will evolve in the new threat environment should give this book a read and do some pondering.

Imperial Guard ballad to the tune of 'Over the Hills and Far Away' The Master of Mankind commands, That we bear arms to alien lands; On what strange world we cannot say, Over the sky and far away.

The dropship's come for us again, But part of me shall still remain, And you are with me night and day Over the sky and far away. Steady boys, it's ten to one, We'll show them how real fighting's done! Though we may'nt see another day, Over the sky and far away.

Herbert disliked the idea of dependency and servitude to machines because of the "dependency and servitude" part, not the "machines" part. This is part of why I hate that "torment nexus" meme; the point of scifi is rarely some hamfisted message that "this technology is evil."

That feeling when people on X are discussing something you've spent twenty years obsessively studying and they're all chucking more or less mangled versions of 101-level arguments at each other with 100% certainty.

Was discussing H Beam Piper's Paratime Police stories and was reminded how much absolute gold there is in Midcentury SFF that could be mined for television and film adaptations, yet Netflix, Amazon, et all seem dedicated to continuing to pump out complete shite.

Took the kids to a local family restaurant for dinner. Girls were playing rock-paper-scissors before food came. Manager stopped me on the way to the bathroom and said how happy it made him to hear kids playing, interacting like that. That he rarely heard it anymore.
