This landmark decision acknowledges the struggles of individuals who experience serious health effects from chemical and fragrance exposure and paves the way for improved access, protections, and awareness.
The American Medical Association’s new policy:
- “recognizes that some environmental exposures may have the potential to substantially limit major life activities of an individual with fragrance sensitivity…”
- “encourages health care facilities, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to adopt and promote fragrance-free policies...”
- “supports the identification of fragrance allergens and disclosure of fragrance ingredients as part of labeling of personal care products, cosmetics, and drugs.”
The new AMA policy is consistent with the definition of a disability in federal law.*
By adopting this policy, the AMA underscores that fragrance sensitivity can be a disabling condition.
The Fragrance Free Coalition welcomes this critical step toward reducing barriers to healthcare. We endorse AMA’s call for all healthcare facilities, government agencies, and non-profits to adopt fragrance-free policies.
