The planned GWOT memorial is absolute garbage. The current design perfectly captures the last 20 years of unaccountable shit policy for a war that was lost in the abstract, confusing, and disconnected from reality. The concept is basically shaped like a crescent moon, very abstract, with water features, green space, and an “embrace” amphitheater using reclaimed steel. It lacks any true meaning, names, or clear intention, just like the GWOT itself.
The Marines on Camp Horno have a far better memorial: sandbags, crosses, names, and a big hill known as First Sergeant’s Hill. Cost nothing and started in 2003 when 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines carried up a cross made from an old telephone pole before deploying to Iraq. More memories and tears have been shared on that hill because it was raw and organic, not some old lady golf course art installation with GWB on the board of directors. The whole project should be scraped.
