As a doctor, US citizen, and human being, I back this initiative to end gun violence in America. Let's get this done - Pass it on!!
🚨🚨🚨BREAKING: Gavin Newsom announces that California will become the FIRST state in the nation to officially propose an Amendment to the United States Constitution to end the nation’s gun violence crisis. California will offer four widely supported gun safety measures: 1) Raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21 2) Universal background checks 3) A reasonable waiting period for gun purchases 4) Banning civilian purchases of assault weapons Smash the heart if you agree every state in the union should approve this! 💙 It’s time for Congress to act!

A physician health program that tells you (& I'm a therapist!) that when you're burned out, you need therapy & yoga (I won't even touch on 'mindfulness') is a lie. You need time off to recover. Then therapy & embodied practice to support the recovery, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒕.
"Burnout means you are sick and need time to recover from this shit-show of a healthcare system. And to pet the cat." Bonnie Larson MD

They should do this for medicine...
A Dutch supermarket chain introduced slow checkouts for people who enjoy chatting, helping many people, especially the elderly, deal with loneliness. The move has proven so successful that they installed the slow checkouts in 200 stores.

This includes all overperforming, seemingly perfect doctors w/ a smile for everyone...with the environment always promoting self-sufficiency/independence, they could be at a greater risk if they haven't learned to ask for help (or even if they do, there is limited time/resources)
"We’re all having some tough conversations right now—especially about the people who seem “fine.” Those who are described as lighting up the room and exuding warmth and love… are they really okay? you know how deeply people can hurt internally without showing it on the outside.

A simple but very great reminder for us all from @EmmaNeuropsych as this is easy to forget - this has been a help to me in last few weeks and hope it helps you too 👇

A good way to track ur mental health. Setting aside things like the system (which could be like lightning, or maybe the rope breaking which sends u down the mountain again), u have full sovereignty over urself so do what u can to keep climbing that mtn #selfcare #knowyourself
On #WorldMentalHealthDay we are reminding ourselves of this lovely visual of 'The Mental Health Hill' from @EmmaNeuropsych
Thank you @gradydoctor, for your words that paint a mosaic moment of humanity, and for all that you do, and for all that you are❤️🙏❤️
1/ They stood in clusters near the emergency entrance. Their expressions were tell-tale of some abrupt awful. Yeah. Two people embraced, burying their faces into one another and rhythmically crying. Another person watched with folded arms, face covered in a sheet of tears.

A prescription for burnout: FEEL the rage & use it to ACT. "Acceptance is a useful stance, but we can’t let it lull us into submission. The healthcare workers I speak to often ask, 'What can we do about our grief and rage?' I don’t want them to accept that rage as unavoidable.'"

For all docs who think "that's just the way it is:" it doesn't have to be, it's just that apathy probably got the best of u. It means it's time to take care of urself, heal that part of u that doesn't want 2 care because it's too much to bear. Then come back 2 fight when ur ready
C.S. Lewis was so wise! 👇🏽

"Maybe everything hurts Our hearts shadowed & strange But only when everything hurts May everything change" - Amanda Gorman #Hymnforthehurting Thank you @STEPSPsych for posting. Pain is often the catalyst for change.
Today we want to share the moving new poem by Amanda Gorman - Hymn for the Hurting #AmandaGorman #Hymnforthehurting
I attended the Alliance for Health Policy's Summit on Mental Health in DC today - Xavier Becerra, sect. HHS was the keynote who spoke about the 20x increased investment in mental health & quoted Frederick Douglass: “It's easier to build strong children than to repair broken men"

No one is immune from this occupational hazard. Residents, attendings, & esp interns, please consider signing up for this - peerrxmed.com - where u find a buddy/mentor & check in with them regularly. All residency programs should have their interns signed up for this
An intern in another residency at my program died from suicide last night, just two weeks into residency. Check on your interns and your residents. This job is hard enough without losing each other. Please let this be the last. #medtwitter

Current/future docs, take note. This is how u heal the world. It starts w/ u 1st. In a training system that's not designed for u to be healthy, u have to find ways to protect ur health against all odds, & as u progress always seek ways to change it so it CAN be a healthy system💪

A good read for med studs & residents. 1st step is realizing that u have a toxic relationship w/ urself. Beyond this article, next step is admitting that our environment groomed us for this. Then learning new ways of being better to ourselves now AND planning changes in the system

Abortion is healthcare. Proud to have been there all day to support this movement. America should not be going backwards. As a doctor, I want every woman to have abortion access if she needs it. Donate here if you can: abortionfunds.org/

I had a near miss on the road while driving 1 hr home after spending 28 hrs in the hospital (was told to stay for AM lectures). I was prying my eyes open & praying that I would make it home, because I didn't want to sleep for 8 hrs on the side of a highway #ItDoesntHave2BeThisWay
