One of the elements I took out due to time constraints was how the music mimicked a balalaika, with triplet strumming, plus the polka-style bass.
Great to hear music from Papers Please. In spite of this game taking place in a made-up country, many facets of the games design (including the music) give you a good geographical idea of where it might be using existing cultural cues #NACVGM

This was one of the overarching ideas for me: Papers, Please and This War of Mine in particular are games that make you feel guilt.
YES so glad that Lind is discussing Papers Please. It challenges the notion that games should be fun pretty directly. #NACVGM

Powell: discusses the Butterfly Effect mechanics. This sounds very reminiscent of Detroit: Become Human! #nacvgm
2
William Bennett: the "hauntological" experience has strong ties to nostalgia #nacvgm
Grasso: discusses how music motivates the player to keep moving since it drops out if the player lingers in an area - a nice tie to Saari's video from yesterday! #nacvgm
Stasis is an element that I've encountered a lot in game music analysis - whether it's harmonic stasis, melodic stasis, mode 'noodling', or ostinatos creating a sense of moving-while-not-moving. What are your stasis examples? #nacvgm

Grasso: positions games on a spectrum of ludic-to narrative. This brings up questions of what defines play? #nacvgm

Julianne Grasso explores the question of games-as-art #nacvgm

We're back on! Steven Reale and Isaac Hraga discussing game music composition from an educational perspective - this might be very useful for ny next offering of Video Game Music next year! #NACVGM
2
Austin: This presentation has me thinking of people 'trying too hard to be cool' - Austin provides a convincing argument that the Super Mario rap example is providing that cringe factor through cultural appropriation, which explains a lot. #nacvgm

You know that moment where a performance is so bad that somehow it magically becomes good purely out of entertainment value? That moment is now. #nacvgm

(I should clarify: that's the topic of Michael Austin's presentation, not a comment on the presentation itself!)

Deaville's paper explored alternatives to story-driven musicals (and we're expanding on that in the question period). Do you need a story to have a musical? #nacvgm

Deaville: translating game to film loses a key component of the experience, interactivity #NACVGM

Jim (James) Deaville is discussing adaptations between film, game, and stage (and also representations of the stage in game), pulling from theories by Linda Hutcheon. @queensjenn, I feel like you would love this talk - I'll have to report back! #NACVGM
