When you have a weather event that takes out a crop on highly productive soil it is extremely important to replace that crop with something living to continue to feed the soil microbial. Your soil is living and just like a feedlot if you don’t feed the cattle they will die.

Not hard to see the very low N blocks in my PivotBio study. The light yellow strips only have 25# of N applied this year. Field was soybeans in 23 with a heavy winter wheat cover crop terminated mid May.
