It’s that time of year again!
I’m hiring three 🦆 technicians to assist in data collection for my Master’s project on Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. Please share!
New paper! We analyzed coyote abundance across the continent working w/@RolandKays & SNAPSHOT USA
Hunting seemed to ⬆️ abundance
Wolf, puma, & bear effects were habitat-dependent
Urban effects flipped from ➖ to➕as spatial scale increased

Woodcock are a peculiar shorebird and nest during their spring migrations (up to 6x). Here are some of the migratory movements taken between nesting attempts for individually GPS-tagged females during 4 breeding seasons in eastern North America #itinerantbreeding#EWMRC
What is going on here? Something I frequently observe: Wood duck eggs appear to be depredated at greater rates than hooded merganser eggs (marked with red X’s).
Purpose-built open-source algorithm for classifying ducks from UAV imagery. Come see Zack Loken's talk at Ducks9 this week!
(model currently instructed to ignore hens...not enough imagery right now for the model to parse them)
My brother and I defended our dissertations! I’ve accepted a postdoc at @universityofri and @BaknerNicholas at @tennesseetech. We couldn’t have done this without the support of our family, friends, and PhD committees. Proud of you Nick!
Calling all 🦆 people!
I’m hiring waterfowl technicians to collect field data for my Master’s project. Come on down to Louisiana and work with Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks, Wood Ducks, and Hooded Mergansers!

Putting the finishing touches on our custom PyTorch machine learning algorithm that automatically enumerates and speciates ducks from drone imagery!

Congratulations to Warnell Ph.D. student Nicholas Bakner, the 2023 recipient of the E.L. Cheatum Award! This award recognizes excellence in academic achievements, personal qualities and participation in professional affairs and public issues.
@BaknerNicholas
New short communication in Food Webs by myself and @KevinRingelman. We used modified trail cameras to observe wood duck nests and found red-bellied woodpeckers depredate and consume eggs when nests are unguarded.

Congratulations to @KatieMiranda_ for defending her honors thesis! You’re an incredible person and taught me so much. She will be heading to Minnedosa, MB to work for @DeltaWaterfowl. Good luck Katie! I know you’ll succeed in whatever you decide to pursue!
Our team captured the first black-bellied whistling-duck of the year today. Like wood ducks, they are nesting ~1 month earlier than usual. Prior this year, the earliest capture we made was on April 22 during my first field season in 2020.
It’s almost been 2 months now.
Thanksgiving morning Effy passed away. Her intestines twisted for some unknown reason; she died from sepsis following surgery.
She really lit up the room and things are sure different without her.
Love you pop-pop.
