Thanks to @ItalyMFA, with @Assonime for having @Trade_EU at the 3rd Italian Forum on export controls. 2 objectives today:
- discuss the challenge of growing controls on emerging tech or raw materials.
- seek Italian industry views on the evaluation of the EU Regulation this year.
G7 Trade Ministers’ Statement reaffirms that export controls are a fundamental policy tool to address the challenges posed by the diversion of technology for activities that threaten global, regional, and national security.

@Trade_EU. Coming soon to a screen near you👇👇👇our Annual Export Control Forum - Tuesday 6th December live. Keeping everyone safer in a turbulent world 🌍…even Saint Nicholas 🎅. @DRedonnet
Yesterday I gave a talk at @EU_Commission@EUXCFORUM on risk assessment in export controls over surveillance technologies. Export control is where technicality is intertwined with norms & politics. #humanrights#ICCPR are part of regulatory discourse. @SimUtrecht@UniUtrecht
Takeaways on export control trends at @EUXCFORUM 🇪🇺 by SIPRI's @KoljaBrockmann:
1⃣Geopolitics, not non-proliferation, is current driver of export controls
2⃣COVID-19 impact shows that regimes must meet more often
3⃣Regimes must better promote benefits of adherence
👏Applaud EEAS Security and Defence Director @joannekeatwork for condemning China's attempts to dismantle export control regimes. The loose UN-based regime China proposes would dilute the proliferation protection we currently have @EUXCFORUM 🇪🇺
