This is NYC.
New York is actually really nice & pleasant.
after two days in new york, here are some of my initial impressions
- people are beautiful, but it's leveled out by the sheer number of people, most of whom are average
- people are social. they say hi on the street, make eye contact, approach and compliment
- interestingly, the most common compliments were wholesome: "gorgeous" and "beautiful" vs other adjectives i hear elsewhere - it’s not sleezy or pickup-y
- people are not shy: women compliment my dress choices, a random guy recognized my bag brand (very niche melbourne brand), and men complimented me genuinely
- most compliments were in passing: people didn't stop to chat, they just complimented me and moved on, super nice
- new yorkers are notorious jaywalkers and will walk into oncoming traffic thinking they'll win
- new yorkers are slow, i constantly have to overtake
- smells are many and varied, not always good, but short lasting, so it doesn't really bother too much
- it's not at all dirty. yes, the streets show years of wear, but not like someone just littered, spat, or threw up
- brick is beautiful. bring back brick and old timey facades, so enjoyable
- sweltering in summer
- people are out and about and every park is packed
- citibikes are a rip off and way more expensive than lime bikes
- strangers are super nice and helpful on cold approach: i didn't have my phone and a random guy offered to call me a cab on his dime
- 24/7 corner stores everywhere, great for a late night ben and jerry's
- people do dress nice, not even insane, just properly, and it really makes sf look bad. i knew this, but it's a visceral experience haha
- so far i have less fomo than sf, because everything you can do here is great and it's choice overload, so it doesn't really matter what you miss. there are a million other things, vs sf where there's like one good thing happening
- walkable, so so walkable
