“We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent." — Justice Sonia Sotomayor pbs.org/newshour/amp/nation/…

On political endorsement wapo.st/3YmeD3T This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. @realdonaldtrump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner @jeffbezos (and others). Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.

The system failed Robert Roberson in every way. The courts have refused to consider evidence not only that Robert is innocent, but also that no crime ever occurred. The pardon board—supposedly a “safety valve”—refused to intervene. Only @GovAbbott can stop this execution now.

The #DeathPenalty is always inadmissible, because it attacks the inviolability and dignity of the person. I appeal for its abolition in all countries of the world. We must not forget that a person can repent and change, even up until the very last moment of their life.

Justice Thomas’s revised financial disclosures still don’t reflect all the gifts he’s received. And we aren’t just missing one or two.

Last week, a lawsuit was filed in the California Supreme Court stating that the death penalty violates the Equal Protection Clause of California’s Constitution because it's applied in racially biased manner. #ConfrontRacism @AGRobBonta @GavinNewsom naacpldf.org/wp-content/uplo…

BREAKING: Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen is seeking resentencing in death penalty cases from his county! This is the FIRST time any elected district attorney in the US has sought to eliminate death sentences in a systemic way. #DeathPenalty #BiasedBeyondRepair

Every scene in "Dead Man Walking" carries profound, almost unbearable weight, each one driving forward relentlessly to the end, which is the goodbye between Joe and Sr. Helen just before he is put to death. 📸 Jonathan Tichler

I agree with @SenDaveCortese when he said: “We can adopt resolutions on racial justice, we can set up commissions & special oversight boards, but until we change the laws that are leading to mass incarceration of people of color, none of that is going to matter.” Pass #SB94!

While many people serving life-without-parole have already committed themselves to decades of spiritual growth, accountability, and redemption, this bill will provide incarcerated people with further incentive to participate in rehabilitative programming. Yes on #SB94

#SB94 follows a clear three-step path of rigorous evaluation: judicial discretion, the Board of Parole Hearings, and the Governor's review. Public safety officials and victims will be involved and consulted at each step in the process.

The same person who wants to pardon a white man convicted of murdering a Black Lives Matter protestor also thinks it's a bad idea to let CA judges take a second look at extreme sentences mainly served by people of color?  This is why we need #SB94: justice is NOT meted fairly.
