I recommend everyone who can goes to one of the places on this planet that almost nobody else goes to, at least once. It doesn't have to be dangerous, just remote. It opens your eyes. Humanizes people who would not feel real otherwise.
Great 2-part essay by @PhilLawler arguing that the fact that the Secretariat of State is the most powerful office of the Vatican thwarts efforts for reform. Because of its focus on relations with the world’s governments, tends to give primary attention to worldly rather than the pastoral concerns - as seen in the "ostpolitik" approach to relations with China, Muslim regimes, South American Marxist states, etc.

From the outside looking in: a general lack of social skills. I'm not just picking on the guys either. I can't tell you how many conversations I've heard from young ladies and it's clear they have no idea how to navigate this complex social dynamic.
