On this day in 1971, Simone Langenhoff, aged 6, was killed while cycling to school; hit by a speeding driver. Her death and the movement started by her father, Vic Langenhoff, a newspaper journalist, changed an entire country and saved thousands of Dutch lives. Here's how 🧵

Very positive meeting last night with @communitydk1953 leader of Colchester City Council on the issue of inappropriate fines for cyclists. We appreciate his email this morning and the commitment to work together to get this resolved.
My sincere thanks to the Colchester Cycling Campaign for drawing our attention to recent questionable fines for cyclists. I have been in touch with a number, where known, but through you I'd be grateful if you can pass on my personal apology to all those affected. We must look after all users of our city centre, but we got this wrong and will take the learning as swiftly as we can. We have taken immediate action. To look at the causes, to do better, to withdraw contested fines and look at others. To ensure residents know, as you will, that the City Council welcomes active travel and cyclists of every age and are committed to a better cycling infrastructure and to making cycling an attractive as well as healthy choice for all. My thanks again for all you do with us to make that possible.
