Work requirements come from the idea that people work less if they receive government support. But do these programs actually reduce work? In a new WP, @ChloeNEast and I show that for most SNAP (food stamp) recipients this is in fact NOT what happens. tinyurl.com/worksnap

A few more words about the "Practical Guide to Shift-Share Instruments" that we just posted (w/ @instrumenthull, @XJaravel) We tried to make it useful to wide groups of readers: new users of shift-share IVs, experienced users, and those who didn't even know they were users (1/N)
1/5 Looking for a clear and gentle intro to shift-share instruments? I'm excited to release today our "practice guide to shift-share instruments" with @borusyak and @instrumenthull, forthcoming at the Journal of Economic Perspectives @AEAjournals 👇👇👇👇👇

Switching to race-blind admissions lotteries increases racial segregation. Segregation arising from mandated race-blind admissions causes student achievement and college attendance rates to decline.

My paper w @David_E_Simon on the safety net for job losers is forthcoming @JPubEcon! Results can be summed up in a few figures & access is free for 50 days👇 32% of lost earnings replaced by public benefits (mostly UI) & this reduces poverty by 18pp, but regressive at bottom

Wrapping up #NBERSI w/ important work by @ChloeNEast & @EconJason on labor supply and SNAP disenrollment effects of work requirements. Not much evidence for increased labor supply but rather large drops in enrollment as a consequence

This research will shed light on two key economic questions about modern transfer programs: 1) what factors impact program take-up and targeting, and how do these effects interact across programs; and 2) how do transfer programs impact participants' economic and other outcomes.
