New Paper! Here I argue that the list of ingredients on the back of a pesticide should no longer be a secret. Secrecy isn't in farmer's or consumer's interests! I also take on the industry arguments defending the practice. 1/6

If you could stick a bunch of sensors into a bee colony placed out in farmlands, what would you want to measure? I've got temperature, humidity, colony weight and bee entry/exit down, but I imagine there are other metrics that'd be super interesting. Thoughts?

Banning pesticides in towns just makes sense. We can control weeds without them, and it’d make our civic spaces safer.

NEW PAPER:
We report, for the first time, the scale of how many different pesticides are on sale in the UK and Ireland.
Nearly 2,500 different pesticides are on sale in the UK, from 266 different active ingredients.

And almost 500 products on sale to totally untrained gardeners!?! There could be just 10, rigorously tested, products on sale to gardeners and there would be no complaints from the general public.

There's simply no reason we need this many products on sale. Fewer formulations (without limiting the number of active ingredients), would make it easier to make sure pesticides are safe, and wouldn't impact food production at all.

Alarming instances of PFAS contamination in pesticides (both deliberate and accidental) in USA. Highlights the weaknesses in transparency regarding pesticides.

The authors were limited in surveying which pesticides/adjuvants had PFAS because of trade secrets laws.
Scientists need to be able to independently verify the safety of pesticides else we end up with bioaccumulation of nasty undisclosed ingredients!

Good commentary on PFAS usage in pesticides, and their environmental effects. Co-formulants being kept secret doesn't mean they're all nice friendly substances, it means we don't if some of them are toxic forever chemicals.

Farmers have to use IPM and do all sorts to minimise pesticide usage. While county councils just reach for the bottle because it's the most convenient option. Yet another example of double standards for pesticides and farmers.
