Ed (he/him) is the sum of all his parts...archery, physics, games, cartoons, friends and beer! I work at BESSY II (HZB) but I think and speak for myself.

CW: #Mastodon 😁 I moved. Things I'm still checking Twitter for.@BVG_Tram updates. Irl friends who haven't decamped (yet?) But I can now waste as much time reading Toots as I used to reading Tweets. And I am presented with less rage-inducing content. And no ads.

I don't know, does retweeting an official Twitter support tweet count as advertising platforms like FB, insta, mastodon? Which are all excellent and terrible platforms.

The commentators I cared about have mostly moved. The bots I follow for timeline cleansing are moving. Would like to see a few more journalists move over, but the @BylineTimes stable is there. Plenty of Physics/science people there. Will workplace/institutional accounts move?

Just a test to see if I can still post my @Ed_Rial@universeodon.com handle.

Without immigration, the trains wouldn’t run, businesses wouldn’t function and the NHS wouldn’t exist. We will not end cheap labour by dividing workers and belittling migrants’ contribution. We introduce a £15 min wage, end zero-hours contracts & back striking workers instead.

This has made my week.
one time in college a professor spent 90 minutes talking about an example scenario that involved beef and i thought nothing of it until several weeks later when i found out that my classmate had made a minute long compilation of all 125 times he said "beef" in one lecture

I think @LaurenKNixon1 just spent a day at synchrotron for her inspiration today...

The snippet made me think of all of the #crystallographers and #synchrotron beamline scientists I know. You gotta put that sample in the beam!

Over 1 million people have joined Mastodon since October 27. Between that and those who returned to their old accounts, the number of active users has risen to over 1.6 million today, which, for context, is over 3 times what it was just about two weeks ago!

I wonder if my aversion to Fortran is just that I've yet to see a well written piece of code in Fortran. I mean the tools are there.

Ok world. I need to scream. I know we now have a third mickey-taking useless Prime Minister in as many months. But nothing compares with the pain of working with #python3 for a decade, then having to bring a piece of Numerical Recipes #Fortran77 back to life.

I say this with the most British emphasis possible. This code is rather idiosyncratic.
Lots of political journalists spouting that 'we will never know if Johnson has the backers'. We know. We all know. He's too much of a narcissist to pull out of her could actually run.

British politics may be stale, but the hells are always fresh.
