When I am asked, Is there anything people can do at home to help bees, whether they have a garden, patio, window box, or local green space? Absolutely. One of the simplest and most meaningful things we can do is grow flowers. Over the past century, England has lost around 97% of its wildflower meadows. These once-vibrant landscapes provided food and shelter for countless pollinators, and their disappearance has had a profound impact on bee populations across the country. The good news is that even the smallest space can make a difference. Whether you have a large garden, a few pots on a patio, a window box, or access to a community green space, planting bee-friendly flowers creates valuable feeding stations for pollinators. Individually, these may seem like small acts, but together they form a network of habitats that help bees thrive. By choosing native wildflowers, you’re not only bringing beauty and colour into your surroundings, you’re helping to restore a tiny piece of the landscape that bees have lost.

Who would like to grow some herbs? It is a win-win for you and the natural world! Chives, rosemary, sage all work well outside. Plus basil and parsley can be grown from seed now, and go outside after risk of frosts, in May. A summer of herbs!
Growing your own herbs is a great way to help nature - many herbs produce nectar-rich blooms that attract butterflies, bees, hoverflies and other pollinators. Herbs grown at home avoid pesticide use - and they taste wonderful! Ideas: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

Definitely agree. Plus Calendula marigolds like this beauty are edible flowers as well! And our members have been collecting seed, so everyone can plant some, even in window boxes or pots in a 'yarden' (yard garden).
Instead of using chemicals, attract beneficial insects like hoverflies to keep aphids and whiteflies in check. Nectar-rich planting, wildflowers and areas of long grass will bring beneficial insects into your garden. More ideas for nature-friendly gardens: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…
