A margine del Vertice G7 di Evian, ho avuto un incontro bilaterale con il Presidente degli Emirati Arabi Uniti, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. Abbiamo discusso della situazione nella regione, anche alla luce del memorandum d’intesa siglato tra Iran e Stati Uniti, concordando sulla necessità di sostenere gli sforzi internazionali volti ad assicurare la libertà di navigazione attraverso lo Stretto di Hormuz. Ho ribadito il pieno sostegno dell’Italia alla sicurezza degli Emirati Arabi Uniti e di tutte le Nazioni del Golfo. Il colloquio ha inoltre confermato l’eccellente stato delle relazioni bilaterali e la comune volontà di rafforzarle ulteriormente, a partire dai settori strategici della difesa, degli investimenti e della collaborazione già avviata nell’ambito del Piano Mattei per l’Africa.

This morning, I met with @EmilyThornberry Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, and other members of the Committee to discuss the situation inside Iran, the Islamic Republic’s repression of the Iranian people, and the urgent need to place the people of Iran at the centre of UK policy. I made clear that dealing with a regime that murdered more than 40,000 Iranians in January is not only morally wrong, but strategically misguided. Any agreement that preserves this regime or its remnants will fail. The Iranian people will not accept it. With or without international support, the people of Iran will overthrow this regime. Freedom will come to Iran.
