Some great information on the history of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada. If the Martin government did not pass same-sex marriage legislation on the last day of Parliament, it may never have passed as the Harper conservatives took power for the next 10 years.
In 2005, Canada became the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. The process to get the landmark Act passed included calls for boycotts of Famous Players, lots of debates and speeches. This is the story. 🧵 1/14

Darrin Hagen’s play “The Empress and the Prime Minister” is based on ted northe’s incredible story of community advocacy. Anyone want to help bring the play back to the main stage? 😍💫🏳️‍🌈
ted northe was a drag queen and LGBTQ activist who spent years advocating for the decriminalization of homosexuality. He led protests in full drag outfits, was called titled the Empress of Canada and even Pierre Trudeau called him "Your Majesty". This is his story. 🧵 1/10

Michelle Douglas was an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces with an exemplary service record. Then, in 1989, she was suddenly dismissed because she was "not advantageously employable due to homosexuality". Her court case changed Canadian history. This is her story. 🧵1/10

Klippert spent his final years in Edmonton once he was finally released from prison.
George Everett Klippert spent years of his life in jail and was labelled as a dangerous offender for the crime of being gay. His case led to the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada but he still remained behind bars. This is his story. 🧵1/10
