Breaking: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy was among the tech leaders who raised concerns to senior Trump officials this week re: security risks in Anthropic's newest models. Those convos set in motion the government's new export controls on foreign national access to Mythos and Fable.

BREAKING: The US Govt directed Anthropic to shut down its strongest Claude models. Anthropic received the export control directive on Friday from the government. The net effect is that it must disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to comply. Because, someone found a jailbreak that could make the model reveal cybersecurity help it was supposed to refuse. Anthropic says the government has not shown a broad, universal jailbreak that turns the model into an unrestricted hacking assistant. The shown technique was narrow, found only a small number of already known minor vulnerabilities, and produced capability that other public models can also provide. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote Friday that Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models would face export limits anywhere outside the United States and for foreign persons within it. The model must stay restricted until the U.S. government strengthens its national security systems, which could happen within the next few weeks. Anthropic further said "We suspect that perfect jailbreak resistance is not currently possible for any model provider. Every safeguard used in the industry is vulnerable to non-universal jailbreaks (which can elicit some cyber information in specific circumstances), and it is likely that universal jailbreaks will eventually be found in the future."
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

🇺🇸 The U.S. just deemed an AI model so dangerous that nobody on earth is allowed to use it, including the government itself. The Trump administration moved to block all foreign access to Anthropic's most advanced models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick notifying CEO Dario Amodei that they now fall under export controls. The trigger, per an administration official, was another company's claim that it had jailbroken Mythos, raising national security alarms. The administration had reportedly tried to get Anthropic to delay the release and failed. The result is a strange bind. Anthropic already sits on a Pentagon blacklist deeming the models too risky for the government's own use, and now a Commerce regime deems them too risky for foreign use. Rather than navigate the licensing maze, the company cut off access for every customer late Friday, calling it a "misunderstanding" it's working to resolve. The official said the lockdown stays until the government hardens its own security, possibly within weeks, stressing that Trump "does not want to hurt the industry." Source: Axios / Writer: Daniel

🚨 Due to national security concerns, the U.S. government issued an export control directive to SUSPEND all foreign access to Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 (including access by foreign nationals inside the U.S.). As I wrote in my newsletter this week, Mythos has triggered a massive AI policy shift in the U.S., which is already echoing globally. We've entered what I've called the 'adolescence of AI policy,' and there is no coming back. For countries, it means the "wait and see" approach is no longer an option, as there could be immediate geopolitical consequences, including from a cybersecurity perspective. Read David Sacks'(a key Trump advisor and previously "AI czar") full account below. I'm also adding a link to my article "Mythos and the Adolescence of AI Policy." (link below).
I’ve had a number of conversations with folks inside and outside government about the current situation with Anthropic, and here is what I believe to be true: — As we know, Anthropic publicly released its Mythos class models earlier this week under the commercial name Fable. — Fable is Mythos with guardrails. But if those guardrails fail, then you’ve exposed Mythos and its advanced cyber capabilities to people who shouldn’t have them. (Keep in mind that Anthropic itself widely promoted the idea that Mythos was a cyberweapon and needed to be regulated as such. They asked for government regulation of Mythos and championed the guardrails on Fable. If there is a vulnerability — big or small — it is Anthropic’s responsibility to patch.) — A highly credible trusted partner of both Anthropic and the USG who was testing Fable came forward with a jailbreak of those guardrails. The Admin asked Dario to fix the jailbreak or de-deploy the model. Dario refused. — In their blog post, Anthropic defended its decision by saying the jailbreak isn’t serious. That is not what the trusted partner and the USG believe; nor is that kind of minimizing language consistent with Anthropic’s brand as the AI safety company. It’s difficult to fathom how they could claim a jailbreak allowing operability of a cyber weapon could be defined as not “serious.” — In the past, Anthropic has always said that safety must be top priority and taken super seriously. In this case, Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the consumer model over safety. — In reaction, the Admin issued the export control. The Admin did this reluctantly. It’s been very surprised that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to cooperate with a reasonable safety request (ie fixing the jailbreak issue). Anthropic’s reaction is very much at odds with their branding and ethos as a safe AI research community. — The Admin’s hope now is that Anthropic remediates the safety issue, the export control is lifted, and Fable goes back into general release. The Admin wants all of this to happen as soon as possible. It is frankly bewildered that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to comply with safety requests that it previously said were its highest priority. — Those trying to misdirect and tie this action to the prior DoW/Anthropic issues are wrong. The Admin values Anthropic’s technical capabilities and feels that this issue, while serious, should be easily resolved. The ball is in Anthropic’s court.

Astonishing… and yet… not. Intelligence, power and geopolitics are inseparable. The one who controls AI rules the world.

Another signal that non biological intelligence WON’T be distributed like a utility any time in the near term future. Putting aside need to scale the infrastructure and efficiency-maxxx every part of the hardware and software stack supporting Intelligence production, the real barrier is politics, not physics.

Many of these policy ideas have common-sense appeal across the political spectrum, and the sooner we act on them, the sooner everyone shares in AI's benefits.

In addition to transparency, I now believe frontier models should face mandatory third-party testing for cyber, bio, and autonomy risks—with the power to block or revoke deployment of models that pose catastrophic risk.

Anthropic has long advocated for transparency requirements for frontier AI, because the risks weren't yet clear enough to regulate precisely. That is no longer sufficient.

Today I'm publishing a new essay, Policy on the AI Exponential. AI is progressing extremely fast—much faster than the policy process was built to handle. The essay lays out where I think the technology is now, and the action needed to close the gap: darioamodei.com/post/policy-…
