Kinda bummed Tesla didn’t get the interchange values right between the interconnections. Feels like Master Plan 3 was written by ChatGPT. At least they separated Texas out 🤷‍♂️

This is a well written report. A helpful read for anyone new to transmission and for people that enjoy digging into the details.

Paul is one of the most inspiring people I’ve worked with. I’m so glad to see his recognition by IEEE.
Congratulations to Paul Denholm for being recognized as an @IEEEorg 2023 Fellow for his contributions to #energy storage and #renewable systems. The recognition comes on the heels of being elevated to Senior Research Fellow at NREL. Read more: bit.ly/3JvZ5VC.

I like big maps and I cannot lie. Especially animated maps about transmission and weather!
Winter storm Elliott, the “bomb cyclone” that froze much of America in December, caused big price deltas. As the cold front moved across the United States, the value of transmission soared, as in this animation. 2/x

I think it is important to correct this headline. PJM capacity suppliers face, on net, $0 for underperforming in December. Load sees none of this $2B despite paying for a product that was not delivered.
PJM generators face up to $2B in penalties for failing to run during December’s Winter Storm Elliott utilitydive.com/news/pjm-gen…

Great thread. All resources have declining capacity values with penetration. Not just renewables.

A few weeks ago I participated in a @FERC conference about interregional transmission. I talked about the value of transmission for addressing a latent reliability risk, correlated outages. 1/6

3) Require a minimum transfer capability between the US interconnections. @BPBartholomew has shown a variety of recent justifications for increasing connectivity between East, West, and ERCOT. 5/6

4) Require mandatory interregional planning. It can just be a roll up of IRPs, to the extent they exist. We don’t need the best plan, just a transparent plan. We don’t have any plan today. 6/6
