New in @theammind: Freedom in space won't emerge by default. It has to be engineered into the systems that sustain life. Microgravity, radiation, closed life support. Every constraint of off-world living pushes toward centralized control. The first durable space societies risk becoming ruthlessly optimized systems where dissent destabilizes survival and exit is impossible. Those foundational architectures will persist for generations. We get one chance to build them right. A case for why the American political project belongs in orbit, and what it will take to keep it alive there. Link in comments.

Had the privilege to give a keynote for the Torchlight Summit. The weekend consisted of giving biologic samples as part of the follow up to the Space Omics study that looks at changes in biological factors, and specifically gene expression with space flight and other extreme environments. Also caught up with other astronaut colleagues who shared great insight regarding their spaceflight - Sian Proctor @DrSianProctor, Victor Hespana, Rob Ferl, Hayley Arceneaux @ArceneauxHayley , Chris Mason @mason_lab & Chris Sembroski @ChrisSembroski What are your thoughts on Space Omics?

This weekend at the Torchlight Summit, I had a fireside chat with @ArceneauxHayley on the changing question of โ€œWho gets to be an astronaut?โ€ Thanks @EliahOverbey & @costofglory for the invite. Iโ€™ve now interviewed 2 of the 4 Inspiration4 astronauts. @rookisaacman up for it?

Thatโ€™s why @ParagonSDC was started in the first place 33 years ago next Monday. And ECLSS is still often the โ€œRodney Dangerfieldโ€ of spacecraft subsystems. Iโ€™m talking about that at torchlightsummit.org/ on Friday morning.

"Human nature is not going to change. But the parameters of human life willโ€”and dramatically. Thrilled to announce Grant Anderson as our Torchlight Summit keynote. Grant co-founded Paragon Space Development Corporation -- the company that builds the life-support and thermal-control systems keeping astronauts alive. Paragon hardware has flown on every major human spaceflight program since 1999: Orion, the Space Shuttle, the ISS, Soyuz, and Mir. Freedom in space won't emerge by default. It has to be engineered into the systems that sustain life. Grant spent decades building those systems. His keynote, The Final Frontier of the Human Condition, takes up the question at the heart of this summit.
I am excited to be the keynote speaker at the Torchlight Summit in Austin on Friday. Humanity is venturing off-planet more and more. But how will it effect us? Tickets are still available for those interested in joining the discussion. torchlightsummit.org/

What to carry forward, what to modify, what to reject. This is the work of the Torchlight Summit at @uaustinorg, and it's the work of every generation that wants to keep a free society free. Thanks @theammind for the feature.
โ€œWhat are the political and institutional consequences of life beyond Earth, and how can we shape them before they solidify?โ€ @UAustinOrg's @EliahOverbey introduces the Torchlight Summit to bring thinkers together to ask how to preserve freedoms beyond our planet.

With Greco-futurism, I'm asking the question "if the ancients had our technology, what would they build?" If engineering is applied physics, then architecture is applied philosophy. And the ideas behind Greco-futurism are growing. Register to the Summit this weekend bellow.

Super excited to take part in the Torchlight Summit at UATX later this week! I was originally slated for my usual beat on Spacecare and startups, but the other speakers and topics inspired me. So, lโ€™ll be waxing philosophical a bit to talk about using Weltschmerz as rocket fuel:
We are bringing scientific researchers, Real Life Space Travelers, theorists and creators (including @pabloantonio, @jamespoulos, @jasonjoyride) together to talk Space in Austin. What would the Greeks do with a spaceship? The Romans? What is America's political future in space? We are moving to a paradigm where space is no longer a free (super-) global scientific playground, but a new front in the superpower dominance struggle. If you're a great power, and you don't get space right, you lose. But is winning or losing only about economic and military dominance? Can space have a culture, a religion? Science and technology might get us there, but it will take storytellers, philosophers, and serious political will in order to make space a win for civilization. Very excited to co-organize this event with @EliahOverbey at @uaustinorg. Join us next week in Austin.

The question of who can be an astronaut is rapidly changing. At the Torchlight Summit, Iโ€™ll be interviewing @ArceneauxHayley in a conversation titled โ€œBreaking Barriers in Human Spaceflight.โ€ Weโ€™ll look at the shift from specialists to trained civilians to the everyone era.
