This. Perfectly said.
There is no justification for acts of violence towards innocent civilians, and words feel insufficient in expressing the weight of my condemnation of the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas last weekend. Over this difficult week, as I've listened to friends and colleagues share their moments of dread, heartbreaking stories of loss, triggering of generational trauma, and their unquestionable anxieties over a surge of anti-Semitic sentiments globally and here in the US, my heart has grown heavier from the gravity of their pain and fear.
My conversations and personal reflection have reinforced two important truths: First, the undeniable importance of publicly expressing my personal support and standing in solidarity with the Jewish community. Second, the poignant reminder that many friends and neighbors are profoundly hurting, even when their suffering is hidden behind their stoic facades.
I unequivocally condemn the terrorist actions by Hamas and deeply mourn the tragic loss of all innocent lives that have and will result from these acts. I stand with the Jewish community and the people of Israel in these trying times. And I believe genuine empathy allows us to care deeply for one community without diminishing our care for others.
