The Portman Group claims including cancer warnings on labels would cause "unnecessary anxiety" among people.
However, only 13% of Brits know alcohol causes cancer.
The industry wants to keep people in the dark about alcohol's risks, to protect profits.

''We need to make the healthier choice the easier one''
Great intervention from @EmmaCalvert3 (@beuc) who stressed the importance of addressing #animalwelfare labelling in legislation.
Nutrient profiles were supposed to be set by January 2006 to set limits on the levels of sugar, salt and/or fats, above which a food or beverage cannot use a claim on the packaging or for marketing purposes. 16 years later, we're still waiting.

😢This #BlueMonday we're marking a sad anniversary for consumers. Nutrient Profiles to prevent health nutrition claims on fatty, salty or sugary products should have been set... 𝟭𝟲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 ago. Without them we still see unhealthy products using claims as 'healthy halos' 👇

🥣One of these breakfast products has 1% sugar, the other has 34% (‼️) sugar content. But both are able to make nutrition claims on their packaging.
🤨Why?
👎 Because the EU has failed (for 1️⃣6️⃣yrs) to set max levels of fats, salt and sugar for the use of such claims!
Juices with more sugar than cola proudly labelled as ‘antioxidant’, salty processed meat enticing consumers with ‘source of protein’ or biscuits boasting about their fibre content... legislation to #StopDodgyClaims is needed more than ever! beuc.eu/news/eu-16-year-dela…

🛒It’s hard enough for today’s busy consumers to make quick healthy choices in the supermarket.
🥫Health nutrition claims which appear on the front of an unhealthy product's packaging make a difficult job even tougher for shoppers trying to go for healthier options.
‘Rich in Vitamin D’? That may well be but when a cereal is nearly 40% sugar, such a claim isn't deserved. That was the original intention of EU legislation on food claims. But with a history of lobbying long delays, this law is still unfulfilled. Consumers are still misled.
🎂Sweet 1️⃣6️⃣?
Minimum nutrition requirements for food claims were due from the EU *16* yrs ago.
The failure to do so ➡️ even candies can still boast they have 'no fat' or '40% fibre' - leaving info on the staggering amounts of sugar hidden on the back
Time to #StopDodgyClaims

🌱🍔 Few things spark debate like the controversy around #plantbased meat alternatives:
Are they healthier? Why the name?
@beuc’s new report dives deep into veggie burgers to settle the debate once and for all.

There’s a lot of talk about veggie burgers, with questions around how they're named and what they're made of. We've compiled consumer organisations’ views on these products and their place in diets with more diversified protein sources:

At an @EPPGroup hearing on child protection this PM, our colleague @maryantfp will underline harm that young people are exposed to online, inc. addictive design, deceptive practices, data/commercial exploitation...€50bn/year in mental health costs. The EU needs to act:
When it comes to white wine, the label may not tell the whole story. You can look at that elegant label from every angle you probably won't find any information about ingredients or nutritional value. How complicated can it get to know what's in your drink? #PutItOnTheBottle
Last orders for alcohol industry special treatment! Alcohol products continue to enjoy the unjustified exemption from having to provide nutritional ingredients info. QR codes aren’t up to scratch for busy consumers. euractiv.de/section/gesundhe…
16 years since @nycinews published its "Mapping Youth Exposure to Alcohol Marketing in Ireland" report, this broadcast watershed is finally being commenced. But, it is not enough & regulation is way behind realities of digital advertising to young people rte.ie/news/2025/0110/149006…
“The big problem in Europe is this incapacity to not give way to lobbies and put public health first.” 👏
Insightful interview of #NutriScore creator @HercbergS, warning that corporate disinformation is shortening EU consumers' lives.

Growing research base on this area including data indicating the number of reported alcohol-related domestic abuse cases increased by 47%,following an England football victory. Time to look again at alcohol sports sponsorship.

Good to see @Channel4News
covering issue re football & domestic violence. Item notes connection with alcohol as an accelerator of violence. An important consideration in relation to alcohol sports sponsorship which recklessly drives alcohol consumption.
