#OTD in 1970, the Oregon Highway Division consulted with the U.S. Navy and decided the best way to dispose of a whale carcass was to blow it up with a 1/2 ton of dynamite. The explosion caused blubber to rain down on spectators for over a 1/4 of a mile. The TV segment is classic.

I’ve had a great few days at Fundação mamíferos aquáticos in Aracaju, Brazil sampling the bone collections of Antillean Manatees and Green Sea Turtles! We want to better understand how these two herbivorous species are utilising seagrass meadows along the northeastern coast.

Thank you Ray!!
For anyone interested in manatees and seagrasses, it’s worth giving @emmateeeee a follow. She’s doing a super interesting interdisciplinary project out here in Brazil working with a load of amazing researchers.

Do something but do it now! We'd like to heat our houses in winter and pay our bills, you know? We cannot make ends meet by far! Living in the UK and being a PhD student at the moment is involuntarily signing up to poverty.
Thank you for sharing your concerns around stipends. We're reading all of your messages and we know it's frustrating that we cannot give you more of an update yet. Please be assured that we're working on this issue and we will communicate an update as soon as we can.

Why the UK cost of living crisis is so utterly severe for PhD students 🧵 This thread comes off the back of my landlord increasing my rent by £400 a month. Meaning me and my partner (also PhD student) pay over £800/m for our flat, we are lucky ones too! #CostOfLivingCrisis #PhD
