Here's my entry for the @OUGradSch #BakeYourResearch competition. A fruitcake to represent the microfossil assemblage in my samples (raisins, sultanas & currants = planktics; nuts = fish teeth; glacé cherries = benthics), decorated to show "lab" conditions during lockdown.
ALT A fruitcake decorated with fondant icing to look like a messy bedroom with clothes on the floor, with a microscope set up on the desk for working from home.

I found something unexpected in my marine sediment sample! This insect(?) is about 250 μm. We assume it jumped into the sample while washing as it doesn’t look marine and 1.5 Ma old to us… but we are intrigued now, does anyone know what this is? #insects #Entomology #biology
