The Emory Antibiotic Resistance Center fights "superbugs" by tracking them, figuring out how they work, preventing their spread, and finding ways to kill them.
Thrilled to be part of this effort!
The Weiss Lab is HIRING at all levels. Come join us to study heteroresistance and how tiny subpopulations of resistant cells can have huge impacts on treatment outcomes.
Please RT and DM or email if interested.

We agree @Dr_Lori_Burrows. Unfortunately we observed much more heteroresistance than resistance, and in strains with a diversity of metallo-beta-lactamases including NDM1 which is spread globally

Unfortunately we detected a LOT of heteroresistance to cefepime-taniborbactam among metallo-beta-lactamase encoding CRE (29/34 strains). Worse - most of it undetected by standard testing. Congrats @abbott_carter on your hard work and these important data. Thanks @TheLancetInfDis
Exciting news! I'm happy to announce I've been appointed as the Thomas J. Lawley, MD Professor in Dermatology! I'm so proud to carry on Dr. Lawley's great legacy of service & leadership in medicine. Thank you @EmoryMedicine & to my amazing colleagues at @EmoryDerm !
New! Gram- cells need lipoproteins to build their surface. LolA & LolB deliver these in E.coli. But many species only have LolA - where's LolB? For Caulobacter, LolB is... LolA! It's a bifunctional protein! We can even tweak E.coli LolA to do double duty! pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…
Science communications matter more than ever, so you know we're proud of @QuaveEthnobot of @emorycshh for being honored today in Washington DC by @TheNASEM for her commitment to public science outreach. Details ➡️ bit.ly/3zM78rD

The text headline reads National Academies Honors Cassandra Quave with Science Communications Award with the quote from her, "I’m passionate about translating my research on the role of plants in medicine and the importance of food to our health to a broad audience. It’s also relevant to planetary health and to understanding our place in the world.”

Fact: Sepsis is a leading cause of death in hospitals, killing nearly 270,000 adults in the U.S. each year. Without new types of #antibiotics that can overcome resistance, that number will only increase. #SepsisAwarenessMonthpew.org/3cRaP7c
On this month's episode of #SuperbugsUnplugged, Dr. Everly Macario shares the harrowing story of losing her young son to an #antibiotic resistant infection. Tune in to hear why reducing antibiotic use is key to saving lives.
I’m so proud of the incredible team effort that went into this manuscript. Congrats to all involved @jake_choby, @tugba6ozturk, @abbott_carter, @SarahSatola.
We hope antibiotic developers will consider #heteroresistance which may save time, $$, and greatly improve efficiency.
“1.27M people are dying of #AMR bacteria per year, as small research teams are breaking up. The intellectual capacity around the world is being diminished. We must replenish the next generation who can develop antibiotics.” - @koutterson@TheHillEventsbit.ly/3LF107v
"We rely on antibiotics. It's difficult to imagine a world without them. The economic impact and loss of human lives would be enormous. This is an opportunity for us to lead the world." -@SenatorBennet@TheHillEvents#TheHillHealthbit.ly/3LF107v
