Privacy advocate, policy counsel at @privacytoday Also D&D. I’m no longer posting or engaging here - please follow me on Mastodon @emoryr@techpolicy.social
Friends, I’m not sticking around bird land for long, but Mastodon is free open source and decentralized. Honestly I get the complaints but it really is the alternative option to *all this*. If you’re at all tired of billionaires, there’s a clear “less evil” route.
An observation: I have never understood why courts decided “characters” should be protected by copyright rather than trademark. The latter makes so much more sense.

The New York Police Department has joined Neighbors, a public neighborhood watch platform owned by Amazon’s Ring where video doorbell owners can post clips, and where precincts can enlist the help of the city’s residents in their investigations. nyti.ms/3AMxbj0
So… the CEO of this platform and the richest man in the world is tweeting out 14/88 dog whistles. That’s happening. Tell me again why I should stick around here? Every tweet (even this one) feels like a tacit endorsement

Aaron Swartz would have been 36 today.
Aaron committed suicide after being sentenced to 35 years in prison by US authorities for transferring and sharing scientific articles from JSTOR.
Community note
Swartz was never convicted or sentenced to prison. After declining a plea bargain in which he'd serve six months in jail, he committed suicide before trial.

Microsoft responds to the German Federal DPA's conclusion that O365 breaches GDPR (English translation linked at the bottom)
Says little about the data flows issue. Just points to its EU Data Boundary product that doesn't solve the problem.
What a mess.

I downloaded my @Twitter data (eventually), and used tools created by @podehaye to look at how advertisers targeted me on the platform — and what types of information they had on me. You can do it too, (here digipower.academy/)
Here's what I found:

This is the most ridiculous read of the situation. This is not “FTC trying to murder a foundation of the economy.” It’s “advertisers went all in on a predatory, exploitative system and they’re getting called on it.”
In the same way I wouldn’t set up an account on Parler or whatever gross Reddit clone was started for bigots - it’s getting increasingly hard for me to justify *being here on this platform* with this at the head. Tweets ARE an endorsement

A Clearview AI lawyer testified in front of UK parliament today and confirmed what our team at BuzzFeed News reported a year ago: the company has been hawking its facial recognition tech to countries with questionable human rights records like the UAE.

.@LewisHamilton posted the tweet below from the 2021 #QatarGP. He wore a 🌈-coloured helmet there & wasn’t given the #F1 equivalent of a yellow card for doing so. Indeed he was praised for it - & he won the race. @FIFAcom & @fifamedia, you should be deeply ashamed of yourselves.
