WATER & SANITATION PS INSPECTS PROGRESS OF HORN OF AFRICA GROUNDWATER FOR RESILIENCE PROJECTS IN WAJIR WEST The Principal Secretary State Department for Water and Sanitation, Mr. Julius Korir, CBS @JKorir_K together with the Water Secretary, Eng. Samwel Alima @EngSaoalima today inspected the progress of implementation of projects under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Program (HoAGW4RP) in Wajir West, Wajir County. The Wajir County component of the HoAGW4RP focuses on the rehabilitation and expansion of groundwater-based rural water supply systems aimed at improving access to safe and clean water, strengthening climate resilience, and supporting socio-economic development in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). The delegation visited the Arbajahan, Adan Awale, Kobeysurur and Griftu project sites, which have collectively attained an overall implementation progress of 19%. The projects comprise key interventions including: - Borehole rehabilitation and solarization - Construction of transmission and distribution pipelines - Development of elevated and ground water storage facilities - Installation of water kiosks and livestock watering facilities - Construction of generator and operator houses - Establishment of water treatment facilities Upon completion of all project lots, the initiative is expected to provide clean and safe water to more than 63,000 residents and over 500,000 livestock across Wajir County, significantly enhancing water security and livelihoods in the region. During the inspection, the PS emphasized the need for harmonization of water projects being implemented under different programs to eliminate duplication and maximize impact. He also directed the project consultant to ensure all villages are adequately served by extending the water distribution network so that no community is left behind. The Government remains committed to accelerating the delivery of sustainable water infrastructure that transforms lives, builds resilience, and drives inclusive development across ASAL counties

WATER SECRETARY INSPECTS PROGRESS OF THE HISTORIC WAJIR FAECAL SLUDGE TREATMENT PLANT MODERNIZING SANITATION IN WAJIR This evening , Water and Sanitation Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima @EngSaoalima inspected the ongoing construction of the Wajir Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP), located 5 kilometers from town. This essential facility is being built under the Water and Sanitation Development Program (WSDP) in collaboration with WAJIWASCO and the World Bank. The project aims to modernize the region's historic bucket toilet system. Because Wajir has a flat, sandy terrain and a high water table, standard pit latrines risk contaminating the local aquifer. This FSTP offers a safe, environmentally friendly waste-processing alternative. With construction now at 64% completion, the Water Secretary urged the contractor and consultant to increase mobilization and fast-track the remaining work for swift delivery.

President Dr. William Samoei Ruto @WilliamsRuto hosted by Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Mr. Julius Korir, CBS @JKorir_K today commissioned the Expansion of Eldas Town Water Supply Project in Eldas Constituency, Wajir County, marking a major milestone in the Government’s efforts to enhance access to clean and safe water in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country. The project forms part of the Dadantallai–Eldas–Jukala–Wardey Programme, a multi-year strategic water supply intervention being implemented by the Northern Water Works Development Agency to address persistent water scarcity and strengthen water infrastructure within Eldas Sub-County. This specific project includes the drilling and equipping of seven production boreholes, installation of submersible pumps, electrical and control systems, solar power units and generators, construction of 10 kilometres of rising mains and 16 kilometres of water distribution pipelines, as well as the development of two elevated steel water storage tanks with a combined capacity of 500 cubic metres. In addition, the project has delivered improved sanitation facilities through the construction of four Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrine blocks and enhanced security of critical infrastructure through perimeter fencing of project sites. Once fully operational, the project will provide reliable access to clean and safe water for more than 10,200 residents, while also supporting livestock watering and improving public health, sanitation and socio-economic development in the area. The commissioning of the project underscores the Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to water services and improving the quality of life for communities across the country. Others in the entourage included Eldas MP Hon Adan Keynan Wehliye @HonAdanKeynan ,Water Secertary Eng.
