Including stellar surface magnetism in models of limb darkening resolves an outstanding discrepancy with observations. This enables improved characterization of transiting exoplanets and a method for measuring stellar magnetization. Kostogryz et al.: nature.com/articles/s41550-0…
What a wonderful era we live in: watching a total eclipse from Mexico via @NASA while my dear friend @erajpg explains it via @NSF (including polarimetry and magnetic fields explanations!)
I just learned from this post that the 1st astrophysics article by a Spanish astronomer was in 1966 and it was about polarization of the zodiacal light!

I’m very excited to officially share that I’ll start as Associate Professor at @UofSC this Fall!
Your hub for extragalactic magnetism 🧲🌀🌌
We will be looking for several new faculty to join us in the next few years, stay tuned for some news soon.
So what does our spiral pattern tell us about the magnetic fields around Sagittarius A*? The field is actually strong and ordered!

Breaking news: the Event Horizon Telescope team unveils strong magnetic fields spiraling at the edge of Milky Way’s central black hole, Sagittarius A*. This new image suggests that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes.

Stellar Surface Magnetic Fields Impact Limb Darkening Kostogryz, et al., Nature Astronomy
-> B affect limb darkening at a level that allows us to explain the observations
-> improve the determination of exoplanet R
-> B on stars with transiting planets

New paper! Tram and I estimated the dust grain alignment mechanisms present in a galaxy using far-infrared polarimetric observations. Grains are aligned by B-fields, of course, and we now provide their size distributions.

#JWST cycle 3 proposal approved!!! We will perform interferometric observations of AGN with the JWST, yes, interferometric observations with AMI: 2x better resolution and without PSF artifacts to study the 3-5 um emission excess in the central 10pc of AGN
A combo of JWST/NIRCam observations & magnetohydrodynamic simulations suggests that frequent mergers with close companions give rise to bursty star formation and hence the unexpectedly high Ly-α emission detected from early galaxies. @callumwitten et al.: nature.com/articles/s41550-0…
This is an amazing opportunity to get involved in @NASA missions, learn about the programmatic organization of NASA, and have a voice on their missions. #AAS243
‼️‼️‼️If you’re at #AAS243, the @NASA Cosmic Pathfinders Program will have our OPENING session MONDAY 1-2:30p in Room 219! We will be describing the program and having a hack your career workshop. Everyone is welcome especially students & early-careers! @AAS_Office@Dr_Gamble21
@AAS_Office email about masking.
‘Strongly recommended’ masking is not enough to ensure a safe and inclusive #AAS243 during the second-biggest COVID surge during the pandemic.
@AAS_Office while it’s to late to implement all guidelines from last year, you can still enact safety measures: mandatory masking, encourage people stay home if feeling sick, testing and isolating if feeling sick during meeting.
