Had a great convo w a friend, he mentioned economic issues and brought up several myths about exploitation about Cuba's economic woes being the US' fault. I gently pushed back. Later, I decided to dive into the literature and learned a lot!

I caught a mistake, that debt forgiveness figure should be 42b, not 84b; there was some weird formatting in the source text, but 42b was the actual total. I updated the text.

I found this article fascinating. Seems to give good evidence that Norway is quite innovative, rather than being a "free rider" when it comes to innovation. cepr.org/voxeu/columns/are-n…

contrast, in Norway maybe because there's higher trust in govt, and their highly progressive tax rates I think were a reflection of sentiment of the populace, the risk of flight & other adverse effects is lower. In the US, folks dont want higher taxes. spitballing, have no clue.

One interesting argument here was also that maybe having more generous unemployment insurance could promote risk taking, bc it means people dont have to fear quite as much for their livelihood if things don't work out.
