#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: Hisham Mundol, Chief Advisor of Environmental Defence Fund (EDF), says, "Renewable energy is an essential part of India's growth story. One thing to keep in mind is that India has to grow. That part is not negotiable. The question is whether we can grow with the same level of emissions that North America, China, and Europe had while industrialising. The hard reality is that we can't, and we don't want to. We simply can't, because our poor health infrastructure and our food system wouldn't be able to absorb the shocks. We also don't want to, because half of our gas and 80% of petrol and diesel are imported. The more we can find domestic sources of energy, the better it is for our economic security, our energy security, our national security, and the environment..."
He adds, "I'm really excited that Mumbai Climate Week is happening. There are many climate weeks in many parts of the world, but this is one of the few that genuinely capture the voices of the Global South and India's perspectives... People are talking about the Indian context, Indian issues, and Indian solutions. I wish there were more in India and more in the Global South."
