Kenya has achieved a major milestone in advancing climate resilience and addressing the impacts of climate change. Through the @Environment_Ke, the Directorate of Climate Change, Kenya has become the first country in Africa and the second globally to secure technical assistance from the Santiago Network on Loss and Damage. The support, valued at approximately USD 700,000, will facilitate a comprehensive assessment of climate-related loss and damage, and projection of the loss and damage up to 2050. This will help to guide current and future interventions to reduce the increasing and worsening impacts related to loss and damage in the country. This will also provide critical evidence to inform policy, planning, and resource mobilization aimed at strengthening the country's resilience to climate impacts. This was officially communicated to the Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. @Eng_F_Ngeno by @lizcarabine, Deputy Director, Santiago Network Secretariat on the margins of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) Climate Meeting in Bonn, Germany. This achievement underscores Kenya's leadership in climate action and its commitment to building resilience against the growing impacts of climate change, including emerging issues like loss and damage #ClimateAction #LossandDamage #ClimateResilience #KenyaLeads #SB64 #BonnClimateConference #SantiagoNetwork

On behalf of my Ministry , I warmly invite you all to join us in celebrating World Environment Day 2026, taking place today, Friday, 5th June 2026, at the Ol Kalou Arboretum in Nyandarua County. Together with the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ngโ€™eno, CBS, MIEK, and the Director General of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Dr. Mamo B. Mamo, EBS, we are honored to host this important national event that calls upon all of us to reflect, unite, and act. Guided by this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œInspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,โ€ we gather to confront the urgent and interconnected global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These are not distant threats they are realities that directly affect our livelihoods, our ecosystems, and the future of our nation. Our choice of Nyandarua County is deliberate and symbolic. Nestled within the Aberdare Mountains ecosystem and near Lake Ol Bolossat, this region represents the lifeblood of Kenyaโ€™s water towers, agricultural productivity, and ecological heritage. It reminds us of what is at stake and what we must protect. Todayโ€™s celebrations will showcase key national initiatives that are driving our sustainability agenda, including the Presidential 15 Billion Trees Programme, the expansion of electric mobility, and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture at the community level. Environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility. It demands a whole-of-society approach bringing together government, citizens, youth, the private sector, and community leaders. I therefore call upon all Kenyans to join us at the Ol Kalou Arboretum and be part of this collective action. For those unable to travel to Nyandarua, I encourage you to mark this day meaningfully wherever you are plant a tree, protect a natural resource, and commit to sustainable practices within your communities. Together, let us be inspired by nature to safeguard our climate and secure our future. @WilliamsRuto @_KithureKindiki @HonWetangula @Environment_Ke @EnviClimateC_Ke @Forestry__Kenya @UNFCCC @NemaKenya @KeForestService #15Billiontrees

On this world environment day, we are reminded that nature-based solutions are irreplaceable economic assets. In the tourism and wildlife sector, ecological wellbeing directly delivers livelihoods to millions with wildlife driving 70% of our tourism. As a close partner to our sister @Environment_Ke , we remain committed to protecting the migratory routes, community forests, and watersheds that sustain our iconic species. When we protect nature, we protect the livelihoods of millions. By expanding canopy cover and protecting watersheds, we are saving biodiversity and securing our economic future. When wildlife economies thrive, communities become the vigilant guardians our ecosystems need! Happy Environment Day๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช #TunzaMaliYako #JazaMiti #worldenvironmentday

Today, I joined H.E President @WilliamsRuto and other leaders during the assent of the Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Act, 2025, a major milestone in strengthening Kenyaโ€™s environmental governance and forestry sector reforms. The amended law provides a modern legal and institutional framework to enhance sustainable forest management, climate resilience, ecosystem restoration and implementation of the national 15 billion tree growing programme. The Act introduces key reforms aimed at improving sectoral coordination, regulatory oversight, accountability and access to climate financing mechanisms, including REDD and Payment for Ecosystem Services. It also strengthens enforcement measures against forest crimes while promoting agroforestry, community participation and sustainable landscape restoration.

Festus Ngโ€™eno today hosted partners at a Resource Mobilization Dinner held in a Nairobi hotel. The fundraising dinner was organized in support of the 2nd Edition of MFC-ICLIP, aimed at mobilizing and coordinating financial, technical, and in-kind resources necessary for the effective implementation of conservation and livelihood interventions across the Mau Forest Complex landscape. The event brought together partners from government institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations, and was presided over by KCB Group CEO, Mr. Paul Russo. In his remarks, the Principal Secretary highlighted remarkable progress achieved within just 10 months of implementation, including the restoration of over 1,500 hectares of degraded forest land, the planting of 1.5 million tree seedlings, and the empowerment of more than 4,000 households through the innovative TELIS programme, which integrates conservation with food security and income generation. He emphasized that the Mau Forest Complex remains Kenyaโ€™s most strategic water tower, underpinning national water security, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and clean energy production. Dr. Ngโ€™eno further celebrated the growing partnerships between government, development partners, the private sector, communities, and civil society, noting that lasting conservation success can only be achieved through collective action. Calling on partners to support the programmeโ€™s 2nd Edition, the Principal Secretary described the initiative as โ€œa national movement for ecological restoration, climate resilience, and transformation of livelihoods.โ€ #MFCICLIP #MauForest #ClimateAction #LandscapeRestoration #EnvironmentalConservation #Kenya
