“Simple, compassionate validation can help frame rejection notifications as a real and socially accepted loss, thereby granting us space to grieve and offering the first round of social support we need to find closure.”

3 years ago, my PhD applications were rejected. I couldn’t find the words to express my loss until I attended #SciWri22 as a @CASW Fellow and heard @StJudeResearch social worker Erica Sirrine speak of disenfranchised grief. Her words gave me space to heal. This is my story.👇

Immunolabelled my 2-tailed worm! Green=Nervous system &Ventral Nerve Cord (VNC), Red=Muscle, Blue=Nuclei. Separation of the 2 VNCs surprised me! What happened here? 🤔#wormwednesday!
ALT Antibody against acetylated tubulin labels the nervous system. Ventral nerve cord is ladder-like structure down middle of worm. This worm has 2 VNCs!
ALT Phalloidin stains the muscle.
ALT This is an overlay of the nervous system, muscle, and nuclei (labelled in blue).
ALT The two-tailed worm I originally found! This pic was taken while it was still alive. Although both tails could move on their own, only the shorter one seemed to excrete waste.
Check out this great article about the cool regeneration research me and @EvoDeva are doing @Whitney_Lab! Written by the talented @_brentmfoster!

That feeling when you're worried your experiment failed because you don't see a positive result, but then you realize you're scoring your controls and they SHOULD look that way @EvoDeva#gradschool#gradlife#WhitneyLab
What do you do when a neighboring lab has mannequins for no apparent reason? You set them up around the building after work with your advisor and lab mate to surprise unsuspecting coworkers. Obviously. @Whitney_Lab@evopolychaeteo@capitELa4#gradlife#WomenInSTEM
Yes, that’s a real paper clip, and yes that’s a real Euprymna berryi 😍 When the Hummingbird bobtail squid hatches, it’s smaller than a grain of rice 🍚 📸 @timbriggsphoto
Happy #WormWednesday ! Our lab works on Capitella teleta, an adorable polychaete that lives in the mud! This morning was mud collecting day for our colony (and the best weather I’ve experienced so far in Florida). @EvoDeva@capitELa4
RELEASE THE KRAKEN!! I LOVE this article!! (Aka you should take a gander, because it's a great intro, and there are some super nifty photos, too)
