🧵 This is the other side of the pot I showed you yesterday, by the Dokimasia Painter. Yesterday's image was the murder of Agamemnon by Aegisthus and Clytemnestra. Here we can see the sequel...

This beautiful polychrome #Etruscan cinerary urn is a bit of a mystery. A figure of a young man holding a phiale (offering dish) reclines on the lid. On the chest, a scene of battling warriors, with the name of the deceased: Thana Ancarui Thelesa, a woman. 1/

ALT Absolutely gorgeous painted terracotta cinerary urn with the figure of a young fair-haired, blue-eyed man reclining on the lid - propped up by two pillows - and a molded panel on the chest. The figure wears a white tunic (chiton) with two purple clavi (vertical stripes), a mantle - possibly a toga - with a purple border and a gold finger-ring, and holds a libation bowl (phiale). The name of a woman Thana Ancarui Thelesa is painted on the chest of the urn and a scene of five colorful embattled warriors appears below. How did the figure of a man on the top get mixed with the chest bearing a woman's name?

First time I’ve ever seen this fresco from #Pompeii and it has everything: a palette brimming with colours, a beautiful portrait of a genius, delicate foliage, stylised designs and wings!
Thanks to the @nma, Canberra it’s now on display in their ‘Pompeii’ exhibition #FrescoFriday

Some photos from 2013 from my research trip to Ventotene (ancient Pandateria), the location to which Julia the Elder was exiled - approaching the villa and some surviving painted plaster. #roman#archaeology
This clip shows a selection of #Roman surgical instruments on display in Merida Museum in #Spain. The Romans used a number of surgical instruments, including bone levers to move bones back into place, scalpels for incisions & surgical saws for amputations.

On #WorldSandDunesDay2024 (this is A Real Thing), I discover that ancient Greek themes dominate traditional sand sculpture festivals in Great Yarmouth and Norfolk. Who knew?
The Gemma Augustea is such a beautiful & intricate #Roman cameo gem - with an upper scene showing an emperor (probably Augustus) & mythological figures, above a scene showing the raising of a battlefield trophy. An exquisite piece - especially as it was made about 2000 years ago!
A #Roman couple from the 3rd Century AD & now residing in the @ClevelandArt . Uniquely, 3 slightly different busts were commissioned of both the man & woman. The hair, beard and clothes fashion date them to cAD270. The woman sports a fashionable hairstyle from the period.
