I worked on Furi (2016), a game built only around boss fights. Here’s what actually makes a boss memorable: Full breakdown: open.substack.com/pub/cronos… #Furi #GameDev #GameDesign #IndieDev #BossDesign #CombatDesign #IndieGameDev #GameDevelopment

Easy Mode is coming to @CronosNewDawn! Soon you’ll be able to explore the mysteries of the Collective without worrying so much about the dangers. Well… without worrying quite as much. 😉 #CronosTheNewDawn #CronosNewDawn
Travelers! We’ve got exciting news for those who prefer to enjoy the story without struggling with challenging encounters! 🔥 Temporal Diver Mode (easier difficulty option) is coming to Cronos: The New Dawn in Early 2026! More details in the coming weeks!

I'm always fascinated reading about game design philosophies, but especially so here. Cronos is superb. I'm going to be diving in again before the year's out, seeing if I can do a better job at mastering these systems than on my first go round.

Got to finish Cronos: the New Dawn by @BlooberTeam right before leaving for holiday. It gave me a few really good design lessons, along with an incredible soundtrack that will stay with me for a long while. Hands down one of my favorite games this year! 👏

If you're into survival horror design, encounter philosophy, and tension-driven gameplay, here’s the full article: 🔗open.substack.com/pub/cronos… #GameDesign #HorrorGames #CombatDesign #Cronos #SurvivalHorror #GDC

⚖️ Outcome: The tension comes from composure, not mechanical mastery. “Every choice matters. Mistakes linger.”

🔊 Jaws = dread through anticipation. Players always know they’re in a “Jaws zone” — the fear comes from waiting, not guessing.
21
🧟‍♂️ Encounters are predictable, not random. Each enemy type follows clear rules. Familiarity builds dread, not boredom.

🧩 Design Principle #2 — Tools are unreliable on purpose. Weapons jam. Lights flicker. Ammo is scarce. The goal isn’t punishment — it’s emotion through constraint.
17
🎮 Design Principle #1 — The world teaches you. Not the UI. Cronos relies on environmental cues and systemic behaviors to build player intuition without tutorials.

I just released a deep-dive on the game design behind Cronos: The New Dawn — how we built tension, uncertainty, and meaningful horror through gameplay systems. 👇 Thread summary link at the end.

I’ve never been more convinced that to make an outstanding indie game with some « soul », the primary inspiration must be something from your real life, something in your guts, some kind of « life experience ». Not another video game, not a movie, not a tv show.

We were hard into playtesting Haven (i.e. watching normal people play the WiP game) when the lockdown started. And we definitely NEED playtesting to make a good game. So we set up a new way of playtesting. I’ll be watching the testers play on Steam/Discord starting next week!

For me the value of playtests is 99% the lead devs watching players. I don’t do questionaries anymore. So sending a build with a form to fill was not what I wanted. I want to watch. So we thought of screensharing/remote control/screenrecording etc. Discord feels the best pick.

Very glad to see Furi recognized for its story, which is one part of the game I’m the most proud of. It’s one side of the game that exceded my expectations. The game is famous for its gameplay and soundtrack, but really, it has a very deep story, I think. culturedvultures.com/best-ps…
