It's 2 years into this mismanaged pandemic and people who are, or were, unemployed through no fault of their own are still feeling the hits, making recovery after programs ended prematurely even more difficult.

Congress has no problem collecting additional taxes from independent contractors, but not a peep about making them eligible for Unemployment Insurance. #ExtendPUA #FixUI
Instead of taxing the rich, @POTUS & Congress went after average Americans trying to hustle including:
-Airbnb hosts making just $600/year (previously a $20,000 threshold).
-People who sell things over Venmo/Paypal/Etsy (mostly makers & artists)
Really? That's the problem?

What was that bragging we heard about "unexpectedly low new UI claims" numbers?
Guess who else can't file for UI? People who left their jobs, even if they left for safety or health reasons during a pandemic.

This is not the flex the White House is pretending it is. Millions of Americans are no longer ELIGIBLE to file for unemployment because of expired pandemic programs and maxed out weeks. Businesses are closing again & there's zero safety net for workers.

They won't lock down or shut down precisely because they don't want to talk about the nothing that government would do for workers in that situation.
AND YET restaurants, shows, & businesses are still having to close their doors. & there's no help for the affected workers.

Yike! If you lost work and March 2020 and went back to work on July 2021, you would be ineligible for state #UI if you lost work and filed in the 4th quarter of 2021 due to Omicron closures #Unemployment

If you collected unemployment benefits earlier in the pandemic and have lost work due to Omicron, your current eligibility for UI may depend on how much you worked in between lapses.

We're heading into this winter Omicron wave without expanded unemployment benefits or any guarantee of paid sick leave. PPP is over. Rental assistance has stopped flowing in some states and there's no federal eviction moratorium. Basically, we're going in without a safety net.

Another caveat to the drop in Black women's unemployment: Black women's labor force participation fell between Oct and Nov, and, in fact, has been falling since August. While employment did increase, the drop in unemployment (if sustained) happened in part b/c participation fell.

BREAKING: The US economy added back just 210,000 jobs in November, which was well below expectations (forecast was 570k).
The Unemployment Rate fell to 4.2% -- lowest since before the crisis.
Overall, the US has gained back 83% of the jobs lost. 3.9 million to go.

Our new analysis shows that of the 18 million decline in UI claims since last year, 2/3 can be attributed to people finding new jobs, while 1/3 (approx 5.4 million) stem from people losing aid as the result of pandemic-era UI programs ending. 2/
