A MAGNIFICENT day for the natural world as Indonesia announces a HUGE new National Park in Papua. Major thanks to Indonesia’s excellent Environment Minister @SitiNurbayaLHK & her team.   Mamberamo Foja Mamberamo Foja is vast, and teaming with life and species that exist nowhere else on Earth. It covers well over 1.7m hectares of almost entirely intact and critically important ecosystems   It is home to 35 Indigenous tribes who will be front and centre in the management of the new National Park, & it is undoubtedly thanks to their good stewardship that it is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.   This is one part of a hugely ambitious programme to protect people and nature across that extraordinary archipelago & I am so grateful to the govt of Indonesia and in particular to Ibu Siti for her exemplary leadership.
