♟ European Chess for Freedom Workshop explores rehabilitation through chess in Teramo The European “Chess for Freedom” workshop took place in 🇮🇹 Teramo, Italy, from May 17 to 19, bringing together prison administrators, educators, chess officials, researchers, and social project coordinators to explore the growing role of chess in rehabilitation, reintegration and social inclusion. Organised with the support of the Italian Chess Federation (FSI), the TERCAS Foundation, and the FIDE Social Commission, the event combined conference sessions, project presentations, international case studies, and a visit to the Teramo prison, where delegates met inmates participating in the 2nd Continental Online Championship for Prisoners. I still remember a moment that stayed with me—being told, *“your story will be told in a book.”* At the time, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. Today, I’m living it. Chess has been a big part of my journey. It has taught me patience, courage, and how to keep going even when things feel difficult. This book is my story—of learning, growing, and believing that something small can become something meaningful. This is more than just a book launch for me. It’s a celebration of dreams, support, and the people who believed in me along the way. We say a big thank you to @icnnyc for their great believe in us and their unwavering support ❤️❤️ This small place in Ikorodu is where we educate young minds in the neighborhood slum and give them a chance to have a place in the world. This small place has produced national chess medalists and has given over 100 children the chance to compete in the outside world and explore it. Our work has helped over 20 children get back to school through our Back-to-School program. It will be a great joy to have you visit us with the chess board and inspire the children to dream more. Our sole mission is to prove that great things can happen in a small place, and that children from the slums, if given the opportunity, can add great value to the world.
