Journey’s “Only the Young” plays as Louden Swain runs across multiple bridges spanning the Spokane River during the opening credits of VISION QUEST. Director Harold Becker used these bridges as a metaphor for his coming-of-age story where crossing a body of water symbolizes transition, rebirth, and leaving the past behind. I just found this video! Last year @ufc President and CEO Dana White joined me to introduce a special 40th anniversary screening of VISION QUEST at the Fox Theater in Spokane, Washington (where we made the movie)! Cash Stone was my wrestling coach and trainer. He also played the referee at the end of the film! If you'd like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on a limited edition signed poster from this event here: ebay.com/itm/206327405912

R. Lee Ermey enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1961. He served as a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego from 1965 to 1967. Along with serving as a drill instructor, Ermey was also a rifleman and repair shop mechanic throughout his time in the Corps. In 1968, he arrived in Vietnam where he served 14 months attached to Marine Wing Support Group 17. He then served in Okinawa and he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1972 he was medically discharged for various injuries sustained during his service. On May 17, 2002 Ermey received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant, thus becoming the first retiree in the history of the Marine Corps to be promoted.

For anyone who’s ever faced a personal challenge, it doesn’t get much better than the 'Six Minutes' speech in VISION QUEST. This scene wasn’t in the 1979 novel by Terry Davis. Elmo's monologue was written specifically for the film by screenwriter Darryl Ponicsan (THE LAST DETAIL, TAPS). Actor J. C. Quinn absolutely knocks it out of the park here. If you’d like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on an original poster below. I signed and inscribed it with Elmo’s iconic line: “It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.” ebay.us/m/p2kYOc

On the set of FULL METAL JACKET with R. Lee Ermey in 1985. Since we shot the film in reverse (Vietnam in ’85 and Boot Camp in ’86), Lee was serving as technical advisor here. Actor Tim Colceri was originally cast to play Gunnery Sgt. Hartman. Fortunately for audiences (and unfortunately for Tim), Lee convinced Stanley that he was the real deal and replaced Colceri. Thankfully you can still see Tim as the helicopter door gunner in the “Get some” scene. If you’d like to support the @FMJDiary project and exhibition (currently on display at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio), you can bid on some signed FMJ items here: ebay.us/m/pgnKw0

In Full Metal Jacket (1987), Vietnam was London Docklands—production even brought in palm trees.

My character's description from the Duffer Brothers' original 2015 pitch deck for MONTAUK (later renamed #StrangerThings). I worked with the Duffers to turn "Agent One" into the character of Dr. Brenner that we see on screen. They originally envisioned him more like "Keys" in E.T. - unshaven, flannel shirt, and work boots. I suggested he be meticulously clean, have white hair, and wear a suit reminiscent of Cary Grant in NORTH BY NORTHWEST. If you'd like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on a 1 of 1 signed Stranger Things collectable here: ebay.com/itm/198357937632
