"More than the financial burden, what administrations seem to fear most from unionization campaigns is a loss of control over grad students as affordable academic labor." @FORsymp's latest blog post is quite the read! @AcademicChatter #phdlife #phdvoice @eLifeCommunity

For #MayDay, our fantastic #labor task force joined forces with Danny Doucette to bust through some of the myths that exist about unionizing in #academia.

Unfortunately harassment is still far a too common occurrence for ECRs. Here are a few good tips in case you find yourself in a toxic situation:
See this thread...if you are experiencing harassment you are not alone. This is NOT your fault. It should not be happening says @DragonflyMH . If it feels bad it should be addressed. Trust your instincts. Take care of yourself first. Document!!!!! Report - if you want to

Postdocs, you deserve livable wages, intentional career development, and healthy, inclusive training environments. You shouldn't have to demand this from a dept that should already be providing these things. Where you do need to, there is power in collective, coordinated action

A lot of chatter these past few weeks on here regarding postdocs and what they are/aren't expecting from academic training these days. Our president @fatu_sn joining @BerondaM and @RiaDahlberg challenging academic leadership to institutionalize intentional mentorship practices.
The quality of mentorship an aspiring scientist receives can make or break a career, write @BerondaM, @fatu_sn, & @RiaDahlberg in their essay for our Summer issue. But decades of research into effective mentorship practices are not being put to use.issues.org/academic-mentorsh…

It's tough, breaking down cultural norms and expectations. So much of spoken and unspoken academic culture is focused on the tenure track as success. Breaking that down takes more than just showing PhDs the numbers

We're taught to think critically about our and others' data, but rarely does traditional academic mentoring encourage us to do the same with our own career goals, values, and trajectories.
