Gates, Offit, and the media must believe vaccines cause autism. HHS commits to identify autism’s cause—likely including comparisons of children whose mothers received mercury-containing flu shots during pregnancy. Suddenly, media outlets flood the narrative with stories praising autism as a societal benefit. If a link is found, the spin will be: mothers who exposed their fetuses to mercury made the world a better place! Gates now says he's autistic and the "mental style might be a positive thing", boosting "energy level and intensity". Offit's Axios campaign argues "autistic people find that the idea of a cure, of making them not autistic anymore, is the same thing as proposing to make them a different person... [advocate] instead placing autism on the natural spectrum of human diversity". Why would the media suddenly reframe autism—from a once-dreaded, mysterious disorder—into a celebrated trait?
