I've read all of Dickens twice (and hope to re-read for a third time before I depart this place), but had forgotten this remarkable excerpt. ht @adam_tooze

Is it better to be affluent and scammed in almost every interaction every day? Maybe, but it damages the soul. And if our fortunes ever turn, how fucked are we? I feel we’re already seeing that happen.

It’s the 40th anniversary of Back to School, which features one of the best meta jokes ever. Rodney Dangerfield hires Kurt Vonnegut to write a paper about Kurt Vonnegut… and Sally Kellerman gives it an F, saying the writer “doesn’t know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut.”

“Something has to give. There is a break coming. That is what is so amazing about the economy. The stock market is up. Interest rates are down in the United States. The Dow Jones has been rising. It’s as if they hope that somehow everything is going to go back to normal.”
If you only have time to read one explainer for the current state of global political economy make sure this is the one. You won’t find a more succinct encapsulation for the fulcrum of economic and political forces shaping our contemporary condition in the 21st century.

“It is as if the whole British economy is being turned into Thames Water. The owners of Thames Water did not use their revenue to provide clean water. They used it to pay dividends to themselves, special management fees to themselves, and stock buybacks.”
Must read. In one interview Michael Hudson identifies the root of today's grossly unfair, unstable economy and sums up almost everything I've been clumsily trying to get across on this site over the past couple of years. Please share. nakedcapitalism.com/2026/06/…

This was not true for most of modern history and our time period is exceedingly weird for treating it as normal
Gen Z realizing one of the biggest shocks after college is that life no longer happens around you. In school, friends, events, relationships, and opportunities are built into your environment. As an adult, if you don't actively create a social life, weeks can turn into months surprisingly fast.

Grok doesn’t know it is owned by SpaceEx
Jun 12
**College:** Post conflates SpaceX (IPO today; Elon ~nearing $1T via ~42% stake at ~$1.7T valuation) with private X Corp (no public shares/ticker since 2022 take-private; owned via xAI/SpaceX). No mechanism for Twitter-era investors to "cash out" via public "stock price" or pump-and-dump. "Overvalued" = opinion. Index adds are mechanical for large public cos (e.g. future SpaceX eligibility); passive funds diversify, not dump bags. **Fallacies:** Conflation, false causation, appeal to emotion/fear, unsubstantiated malice. **6th grade:** Emma mixed up SpaceX (rockets going public today, Elon getting really rich) and X/Twitter (still private—no big stock market to trick people or sell easy). No proof anyone is using one to secretly dump the other or hurt grandma’s retirement money in indexes. That’s just guessing a sneaky plan without facts.
