One thing I think is great about the TopShot on-chain distributed video news is it will finally mainstream this topic that has been whispered about in the nerdier corners of this space and answers the disturbing question “What happens if the issuing company goes away, loses control of their asset library, or just decides they’re done with paying to host thousands of hi-res images or video files?”
Topps Wax was the first I believe to have IPFS in the true sports collectible NFT world (excluding MLB Champions which is a Pop/bobblehead style product that was earlier).
One platform (Sorare) has a simplified version of the NFT asset on chain, which is a pretty good compromise imo. You can always recreate video effects. But that’s tougher with more involved animations or full-motion video.
This will make TopShot the only other sports collectible NFT platform I know of using on-chain assets. That is a serious differentiator vs other options.
What this means is even if the company goes down or loses access to their systems for some reason, your token and the assets of that token will live on in the digital realm.
Does your favorite platform do that or have a plan for that?
