An octopus may be the closest thing we have on Earth to an alien life form. 🐙 Octopuses just passed a remarkable cognitive test: they can use mirrors to locate hidden prey, the first time this ability has been shown in any invertebrate. In a new study, California two-spot octopuses (Octopus bimaculoides, sometimes called a 'bimac') were trained to understand mirror reflections. When shown a virtual crab in a mirror (with the real stimulus hidden behind them), the octopuses didn’t attack the reflection. Instead, they turned 180 degrees or climbed over barriers to reach the actual location — succeeding about 73% of the time. Researchers used a projected virtual crab to eliminate chemical cues, forcing the animals to rely purely on visual-spatial reasoning. The octopuses also got faster at solving the task over time, suggesting they built an internal spatial map in their memory. Not bad for creatures related more closely to clams than to vertebrates. 📸 Mary Kieseler Source: neurosciencenews.com/octopus…

It is a blessing to see one of these Texas Blue Indigos at the house. Venomous snakes be warned. I’ll give it a 3/10 for the palm dismount.

Every Saturday morning I have breakfast with a bunch of old farmers. Discussion today was population decline and replacement rate in the US. They've come up with a very simple yet elegant solution to increase birth rates. Bring back bench seats in pickup trucks.

A-meow-zing 😻 @NASAWebb and @ChandraXray joined forces to deliver this view of the Cat's Paw Nebula. Different wavelengths combine to reveal young stars at the center of these dusty clouds.

ICON has unveiled a next-gen construction 3D printer that replaces older gantry systems. Moving on tracks between sites, it cuts setup time and labor. With a 70-ft print radius, it can build multi-story structures up to 27 ft tall and 110 ft long faster and cheaper.

More Genesis AI has GENE-26.5, the first robotic brain to give robots human-level physical manipulation capabilities. It is interesting.
GENE-26.5 is rather interesting.

I understand you are poking at Artemis II specifically, and I understand the broader political discourse, but if you are part of the space-loving community, the points below are factual: - POTUS did create the Artemis Program, Artemis Accords, and Space Force during his first term, which all matter greatly when it comes to exploring across the great frontier. - POTUS OBBB/Working Family Tax Cut Act funding is the primary reason we are in a position to accelerate SLS production, increase launch cadence, add a mission in 2027 to buy down risk, and have a real opportunity to land NASA astronauts on the surface in 2028. - POTUS OBBB/Working Family Tax Cut Act funding is the only reason we have the resources to begin building the Moon base in a logical, evolutionary way so that the world will be able to witness dozens of robotic landers and rovers on the Moon to test comms, mobility, surface improvement, power, and navigation, all starting in 2027. - POTUS National Space Policy, established on the day I was sworn into this role, provides the whole-of-government mandate to undertake the actions that are underway right now..return to the Moon, build the base, invest in next ‘giant leap’ capabilities like nuclear power and propulsion to unlock exploration in the outer solar system, provide power in the permanently shadowed regions of the Moon, and set up for missions to Mars, like SR-1 Freedom, that will launch in 2028. While our job at NASA is to undertake and achieve the near-impossible, it certainly helps to have the interest, support, mandate, and resources POTUS has been able to provide.
