❄️🌕 The Snow Moon - February Full Moon
This is the February Full Moon, traditionally called the Snow Moon, a name given by Native American tribes because February historically brought the deepest snows and harshest winter conditions in North America.
Photographed with my NikonP1000 low on the horizon over Florida’s coast at 6am February 1st, 2026.
The Moon appears warm gold / amber because its light traveled through a longer path of Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out blue wavelengths through Rayleigh scattering. This color is natural — not a filter.
Cold, dry winter air often provides:
• Lower humidity
• Less atmospheric distortion
• Sharper lunar surface detail
That’s why the crater rays, maria, and surface texture are especially clear in this image.
Captured with a Nikon P1000 at extreme optical zoom.
Color adjusted manually on an iPhone 16 using standard photo controls only — no AI.
A harsh winter night on Earth can produce exceptional clarity in the sky.
