All of this said, the Russians have WAY funnier names than American players. I learned to read Cyrillic by translating the screen names of Russian L4D and TF2 players. It was a lot of fun and took only a few days.
You notice instantly that you're playing with a generally higher class of human being when you join an American TF2 server. European servers are full of anti-social dribblers with practically zero awareness of other players on their team.

American players with FAR worse aim and movement than their average european counterpart are 10x more aware of what is happening around them. The medics are tuned in. They heal you, they heal EVERYONE. EU medics just tunnel vision a 450 HP heavy. The game is too hard for them.
