CANYON COUNTRY, Calif. — Crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department are responding to a commercial outbuilding fire in the 16400 block of Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, officials said.
The incident was reported at approximately 16439 W. Sierra Highway, where firefighters encountered an outbuilding containing propane tanks and lithium-ion batteries.
According to incident radio traffic, the lithium-ion batteries are experiencing thermal runaway — a dangerous condition in which batteries generate excessive heat and can reignite or explode. Due to the hazardous materials involved, a specialized Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team has been requested to assist at the scene.
Fire officials have not reported any injuries or evacuation orders at this time.
Multiple engine companies, command staff, HazMat resources, and support units have been assigned to contain the fire and mitigate potential risks associated with the propane tanks and compromised battery systems.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area around Sierra Highway and Sand Canyon Road as emergency crews continue their operations.
