The 5 St pedestrian bridge project in South Beach has no activity these days after breaking ground last year. It’s supposed to be done by fall 2026.
As I understand it, there’s an issue between the developers and FPL. The design team reviewed a survey conducted by FPL and found the space they can use for the foundation has been reduced due to FPL utilities present.
Before the most recent survey was given to the developers, Commissioner David Suarez said FPL gave the wrong location to their underground power lines multiple times causing a lengthy delay.
Commissioner Matteo-Salinas was not optimistic about the future of this bridge, saying at a May 13 meeting: “I don’t think this is ever going to get off the ground.” She introduced an item to explore the idea of having an over-water bridge instead.
Seems we’ll know soon if this project is no-go as was originally planned. Btw this was a public benefit promised in the development agreement for Five Park.
