a great day in the exciting of trains
Genuinely how do you even top this in steam railroading? (Media shown belong to their respective authors)

while many may suggest the tour is just to influence the merger, the original trip was planned out well in advance across another Class I railroad and the original destination was Washington, DC. the tour has value from a PR perspective, regardless.
union pacific: thanks everyone for witnessing UP 4014 on here tour! stb:we rejected your merger proposal union pacific: stb i swear to god

This is one example — the only audience broadly receiving this message are train people already. What do you do when someone is acting unsafely is an entirely different conversation.
As @UnionPacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 heads east to Philadelphia, safety is top priority. Ed Dickens, the railroad’s senior manager of heritage operations, offers guidance on how both you and others around you can safely experience this historic event.

Acting condescending towards strangers is the surest path to getting ignored or creating a confrontation.

If someone is acting particularly belligerent, wouldn’t you rather call a non-emergency line or local authorities versus make a hasty 911 call? Even with our own passengers, we have to remind someone who thinks they’re an exception sometimes.

In general, for as much as we promote railroad safety among *ourselves* we don’t promote “how to deal with people who are putting themselves in harms way.” That’s an actual tactic we can take into the field, otherwise aren’t we just kinda preaching to our own choir?
Replying to @FortWayneRails
Well sure but I hope you're not criticizing @RAILMag for using this as an example to educate people.

But it’s equally awful that we lambast people who seem so cavalier about safety while neglecting that no one present or posting their own examples of this behavior do anything intervene in the moment or just post about it for clicks.
People like this lady in pink are going to ruin this for everyone. Get off the tracks and back the #### up! Engage your frontal cortex, grow some situational awareness and worry about how your photo looks later.

Anyone who is worried about this spectacle being “ruined for everyone” would perhaps consider the upside of interjecting to correct or protect a stranger from harm or poor decision making. “Be your brother’s keeper” or it goes away seems like a fair deal.

the number of people confusing @NickelPlate765 for 4014 on socials is both a little 🤭 but what a time to be alive when there are multiple operating steam locomotives traveling around the same regions at the same time enough for this confusion to occur.
