SCOOP: It has long been known that LIFE's editors kept changing their 10/2/64 issue to jive with the Warren Report's "magic bullet" finding. But until we looked into it, only 3 separate print runs had been identified. We unearthed a 4th, meaning that LIFE's editors broke the photographic plates multiple times and printed 4 different versions of that issue—an extremely expensive and unheard-of undertaking (then or now) 🧵

We at Four Died Trying have frequently been asked, "What about Medgar Evers?" Rest assured, the assassination of Medgar Evers will be covered in our film franchise. Evers was killed in his driveway with his kids watching. He was late coming home from an NAACP meeting because he had stayed to watch JFK’s big Civil Rights speech. We spoke with Evers's brother Charles and were trying to arrange an interview with him at the time of his death in 2020. Our franchise's four heroes form the arc of a story that includes many other brave, outspoken people who threatened the State. We hope that no one will be forgotten. —Libby Handros, producer
On this day in 1963, civil rights leader and organizer #MedgarEvers was assassinated by a white supremacist in the driveway of his home. We remember his legacy and honor his family, including his wife, #MyrlieEversWilliams, who was a dear friend of our founder, #CorettaScottKing. #MartyrsOfTheMovement #MLK #MalcolmX #TheKingCenter

All Senate and congressional hearings and testimony should be released within 10 years - no redactions, no excuses. For all the JFK files released from the CIA, we still don’t have unreacted files from the house select committee’s own interviews of key players! We don’t have the Church committee’s transcripts of sessions. Since Luna’s committee is congressional and bipartisan, why can’t the committee just force the release of all those important records? There were executive sessions from Watergate that have never been released. Come on people - it’s been more than 50 years!!!

As journalist @joelengel once noted in the @WSJ, June 10-12, 1963, were "three days that changed the world." "At no time in American history have there been three days like [them], during which several unrelated events altered the nation's course," he wrote. 6/10/63: JFK signs the Equal Pay Act 6/11/63: The forced desegregation of the University of Alabama prompts JFK to give his landmark "Report to the American People on Civil Rights" speech on national TV; soon after, Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức's self-immolation is also broadcast 6/12/63: Civil rights activist Medgar Evers is assassinated; graphic photos of Thích Quảng Đức hit the morning papers "Today we are committed to a worldwide struggle to promote and protect the rights of all who wish to be free." —President John F. Kennedy When Four Died Trying returns, you will hear from historian Andrew Cohen, whose book "Two Days in June" covers these events and more youtube.com/watch?v=58O2De-i…

"Robert Kennedy's death, like [JFK's] was mourned as an extension of the evils of senseless violence; events moved on, and the profound alterations that these deaths…brought in the equation of power in America was perceived as random. What is odd is not that some people thought it was all random, but that so many intelligent people refused to believe that it might be anything else. Nothing can measure more graphically how limited was the general understanding of what is possible in America." —Allard Lowenstein Congressman Allard Lowenstein was one of the first people to start investigating the assassination of Robert Kennedy. When Four Died Trying returns, you will meet his wife—Jenny Lowenstein—who will reveal how her late husband (who was also assassinated) came to distrust the official narrative that was constructed to explain Bobby's death. Thank you, @jimmydie1963, for beginning your series on Bobby Kennedy—and for reminding me of this quote, which explains why so many just accept without question what they are told. —Libby Handros, producer jamesanthonydieugenio.substa…

58 years ago today, Robert F. Kennedy died after being shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. “[RFK] was gonna pull us out of the Vietnam War, and he was making a connection to impoverished farmworkers and the dispossessed throughout this country: Appalachia, the ghettos... He always had a priestlike sense of mission. But he was taking that to a level that was very scary to the establishment. They didn't want to see him in a place where he could possibly wield the instruments of government to go after the perpetrators of his brother's death — and to kill the cash cow that was the Vietnam War.” —4DT director John Kirby, appearing on the @SolvingJFK podcast Today's a good day to watch (or rewatch) the Four Died Trying “Prologue” on your streaming platform of choice: fourdiedtrying.com/getitnow #RFK #Rfkfiles #RFKassassination

One wonders why the LA Times felt the need to repeat the same old discredited dribble. I guess the MSM can’t help themselves. When Four Died Trying returns, you will hear from Paul Schrade, who was shot along with Bobby that day. Paul very clearly explained to us how Sirhan could not have shot both him and Bobby given the bullets' trajectories. In the meantime, if you want the real story, check out two books by 4DT interviewees: Lisa Pease's "A Lie Too Big to Fail: The Real History of the Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy," and Fernando Faura’s "The Polka Dot File on the Robert F. Kennedy Killing." —Libby Handros, producer
"This is ridiculous. You're ignoring all the evidence that has come out long after the official story and trial happened that not only exonerates Sirhan but shows he was hypnotically controlled by CIA operatives, including the one holding RFK at the moment of the shooting. Everything you say about Sirhan was part of the CIA's carefully constructed cover story, but it doesn't match the reality of what happened. It's no wonder conspiracy theories abound when the average conspiracy theorist knows that Sirhan was in front of Kennedy and that witnesses put his gun muzzle 3 feet from Kennedy, yet Kennedy was shot from behind at a distance of an inch. The eyewitnesses weren't wrong or random - the four people who saw them both at the moment of the shooting saw exactly the same thing, and it doesn't match the official story. I spent 30 years studying this and wrote a detailed, heavily footnoted against the primary record book. How long did the LA Times team on this spend? Sheesh. Btw - the newly released files show the CIA was deeply involved with the LAPD's investigation and sort of shoved their way in there. The CIA released a "dummy" file on Sirhan because they are STILL HIDING WHAT THEY KNOW. The media has lost all credibility in this country by refusing to go beyond the official lies in all the assassinations of the sixties and even more recent ones. Sirhan had no motive. The defense team GAVE him that motive because they didn't think a jury would believe he really couldn't remember. But the CIA used hypnosis and drugs in experiments and were able to get people to do things they could not remember. There's so much to say and no one with the guts to follow where the truth actually leads." -- Lisa Pease to LA Times re the RFK Assassination of JUNE 5, 1968. kennedysandking.com/robert-f…

When Four Died Trying returns, you will hear how JFK tried to wrest control of the CIA—and how that could have been one of many factions that wanted to see him dead
This document is a National Security Action Memorandum No. 55, and it is basically JFK’s "never again" moment after getting burned by the CIA at the Bay of Pigs. Signed in June 1961, this directive completely shifts the balance of power by stripping the CIA of its monopoly on covert, secret warfare and dumping that responsibility straight onto the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Kennedy explicitly demands "direct and unfiltered" advice, making it clear he was done with the intelligence community sugarcoating operations or hiding behind plausible deniability. By forcing the traditional military to oversee paramilitary Cold War programs, JFK was trying to claw back control and ensure that if a covert operation blew up in his face again, the military would actually have to own it. It’s a massive turning point that shows his deep, growing distrust of the national security establishment a move that created permanent, bitter enemies inside the very apparatus he was trying to rein in.

These are not the CIA’s files. They are the American people’s files. More than 60 years later, Americans are still told the JFK records cannot be fully processed and released. That is a hard sell from agencies with massive budgets and world-class technology. At some point, “the process” becomes the excuse.

Congratulations, Jefferson! We look forward to seeing the report.
To repeat, this is a great honor and a challenge. Thank you Rep. Luna. .... As of today I will be taking a leave of absence from JFK Facts to focus on helping the Committee inform the public about what we have learned and what we can learn about a pivotal moment in American history whose influence is felt today in issues of war and peace. @InfoMferrell @JamesComer @aarclibrary #JFKfiles #history #secrecy

"Malcolm had a way of describing how 'The Man'—the System—deals with a revolutionary: If they can't persuade you with the goodies, if they can't undermine and assail your integrity, the next thing they do is, they kill you." —Dr. Clarence Jones, in the 4DT Prologue Rest in peace, Clarence Jones, and thank you for speaking your truth to us. When our film franchise returns, we will share more of your words and wisdom.

We were sorry to learn of Clarence  Jones’ death.  He was at Martin Luther King’s side for all the major moments in the Civil Rights movement. His wise counsel helped guide Martin from a jail in Birmingham to the March on Washington and beyond. When Four Died Trying returns, we will hear how Clarence was playing a key role in bringing MLK and Malcolm X together.  Clarence was on the way to the Audubon Ballroom when he heard on the radio that Malcom had been shot.

As King Center CEO, Dr. Bernice A. King, shares here from her speech at the National Day of Action for Voting Rights Rally (May 16th - Montgomery), her father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., organized love into strategic disruption. Malcolm X 101: Don't be a political chump. Chump (chəmp) noun; informal: a person who is easily tricked; a stupid or foolish person —Merriam-Webster In honor of what would have today been the 101st birthday of Malcolm X, today's political climate invites a revisit of his position on some of the issues that drew his criticism then, and continue to befuddle Americans today, particularly unquestioned fealty to a political party: "The Democrats have been in Washington D.C. only because of the Negro vote... You put them first and they put you last, because you're a chump! A political chump." Amid the ongoing gerrymandering saga ahead of the November '26 midterm elections, few summaries cut to the chase faster than Malcolm X's cogent, yet blunt, assessment of blind political faith. The Supreme Court has held race-based electoral districting unconstitutional — the dust has yet to settle on the ensuing frenzy and inevitable handwringing hyperbole over the "death of democracy," but the imperative remains clear: Don't be a chump! #MalcolmX101

#TheKingCenter remembers #MalcolmX [El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz] on his 101st birthday. He’s often and intentionally misunderstood and maligned. But Brother Malcolm was a giant of a man, a mystery only to those who don’t really want a sincere look at his heart, history, and hunger for freedom. #MalcolmX101 #Malcolm101
